Boston has long been a haven for many kinds of underground and experimental music scenes--ska, punk, and grunge exports among them. Sky So Grey - A Boston Dark Music compilation is a smattering of loosely-affiliated bands and solo artists from the Boston area whose common denominator is creating somewhat introspective "dark" music.
SSG continues in the spirit of other local artist-run label compilations produced by the likes of Castle Von Buhler Records, Archenemy Records, and others, which served as a snapshot of the local gothic, industrial, synth-pop, ethereal, and shoegaze scenes in the 90's. Given the passage of time and the ever-subdividing of culture, none of the new artists on the comp fall neatly under those tired genre headings. Rather, the title Sky So Grey summarizes the infinite shades that manifest between the buzzwords of the day.
Conceived in 2007 by Mathew Fuller (x-Seven Sunless Days, x-Scissorkiss), the compilation was also produced by Kelly Godshall and John DeGregorio (both of Decorative Records).
Some of the tracks on the comp have been released previously on the respective artists' own cds. The expected release date is Winter '09.
The disc can be purchased directly from any of the bands appearing on the compilation via their live shows or through their online stores. Soon it will be also be available in select New England retail outlets and online mail order sources.
