The Coits

About Me

[The Coits] are an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington, D.C. in 2003. They are widely regarded as being integral to the revival of hardcore punk, though the band's members objected to "hardcore" being the sole term used to describe their music. The Coits were based in and around Georgetown University and George Washington, with many members attending classes there, and consequently were routinely decimated by decisions to study abroad, graduate or drop-out (hence the frequently shifting lineup). Founding members John Albanese (guitar) and Seth Fineberg (bass, vocals) met in 2002 at Georgetown University. They played their first show at the Notasquat on October 12, 2003. They completed the original lineup by adding drummer Prescoit Martin III and Nathan "The Tyranny" Hunter ..boards.Aided and abetted by their manager, Raquel Rodriguez, the Coits were a model of perseverance. They shared bills with artists such as Medications, Head-Roc, Gurth, Pattern Against User, Myles of Destruction, Babies with Rabies, The Rude Staircase, the Expanded Form, Jim..., and TV John's Legendary Band. The Coits were progressive - musically and politically - and proudly performed a series of benefits for the Georgetown Solidarity Committee, a show supporting Georgetown's Human Rights Week, a show sponsored by Georgetown's Muslim Student Association, a "Bring the Troops Home Now!" benefit at University of Maryland, a DC School's Committee benefit, an benefit and a rally. They also played Kappa Sigma Fraternity in Foggy Bottom, a high school dance in , Meze Lounge in Adams Morgan, XCaliburx Lounge, the Velvet Lounge, the Midnight Mug, and Georgetown University's Copley Lawn. Coits shows incurred considerable controversy, perhaps due to Seth's regular serving of communion and version Bible give-aways to show-goers.The Coits gained acclaim for their unique amalgamation of hardcore punk, funk, folk and new-wave and this - and their unique ability to destroy and enjoy - are perhaps their proudest legacies.Other notable Coits include bassists Shintaro Doi, Greg Mortenson, Jimmy Keith, Patrician Helmicide, guitarist Adit Chellarem and Cindy Fisher of Men. Less notable Coits include James Viano, Metal Mike and Chris Rufo. The Coits gained acclaim for their unique amalgamation of hardcore punk, funk, folk and new-wave and this - and their unique ability to destroy and enjoy - are perhaps their proudest legacies.
