Over the last three years, Andy, Joel, Pete & Kev have been writing, performing and recording songs that would sound great performed by a solo player, but are richly enhanced by their combined musical craft. Their music has a passion and energy that stands alongside any of 2005's most successful acts, and their debut album Just By Breathing In is unlikely to stray far from your CD player in 2006, unless your mate pinches it.
Andy Strong (vocals, guitar) is a gifted and charismatic singer, possessing one of those rare voices that you're not tired of by the end of the album. His beautifully crafted songs are fashioned by crisp and precise guitar playing, and passionate vocal performances.
Joel Newell (bass) and Pete Lumley (drums) make the kind of rhythm section that any group would be proud to have. Joel is responsible for some of the best hooks in the Powders songs, adding a musical depth whilst never overplaying. Pete is the archetypal bonkers drummer, and you'll happily watch him all night. But he's a musician first, and has superb natural feel and technique.
Kev Lucas (lead guitar) brings harmony and depth to The Powders' sound. His playing is melodic and tasteful, adding an unrivalled understanding of musical texture.
There is a buzz about this band, whether performing live or on CD. Their shows include songs from their recorded output, a steady stream of newly written material, and half a dozen well-chosen covers. Their gigs are terrific. The album, though, is a work of genius.
Just By Breathing In builds on the evident talents displayed in the band's 2003 Beauty EP. Ten skillfully written, faultlessly performed and expertly produced songs, aided by the studio wizardry of Ed Poole. Ten quid. What are you waiting for?
