Artist StatementOz is a fictional world found somewhere over the rainbow. It appears in many books, but is most notably realised visually in the 1949 film The Wizard of Oz. At the beginning of the story, Oz represents escapism for sepia-toned Dorothy Gayle. It is this fictional world which she dreams about that suddenly becomes her reality. Through her experience of Oz, she comes to understand herself and discovers what she had known all along - had she only thought about it. On Dorothy’s return she sees her home with fresh eyes with all of her problems resolved.This is the nature of my work. I am the wizard and the Wicked Witch’s Oz is my construct. Dorothy is both my viewer and myself. My Oz has a dash of glitter to make things seem that little bit better, a hint of Disney for childhood fantasy, a few Union Jacks to remind us where we came from, and a few laughs to help us forget.This is quite obviously a metaphor .Humour is the very cornerstone of my practice. Through humour you allow the viewer to let their guard down. My intentions are to encourage the viewer to think about how their perception of my work could be likened to their perception of themselves. I believe that their reactions can signify their place within society and of their understanding of that society’s history.My works in any medium appropriate for example for me the best way to explore class in Britain was to paint Burbery on to porcelain figurines in Victorian dress . And when looking at the cornet lack of British achievement walking 100 dogs thought Falmouth town to recreate and aspects of the 1914-1917 expedition of the endurance was the only way.
