In the beginning I was a nervous, unremarkable man living a fairly unremarkable life. After quitting my job as an engineer at Ace Chemical Processing Inc. to become a stand-up comedian, which I fail miserably. I realized I was a failure. With a pregnant wife, Jeannie, living in a tiny apartment in a poverty stricken neighborhood I began to explore other options. I agreed to guide two criminals into the Ace Chemical plant for a robbery.
Shortly before the break in, the police informed me that Jeannie had died in a freakish accident. Grief stricken, I tried to withdraw form the plan, but the criminals strong armed me into keeping my commitment. Forced to go through with the burglary, I was made to wear a costume identifying me as the Red Hood. Unknown at the time, this was simply a way to implicate any accomplice as the mastermind of a crime to divert attention from the two criminals. The crime was botched by newly installed security measures and a violent shootout and chase ensued. The criminals were gunned down by security personnel and I found myself confronted by a certain caped crime fighter investigating the disturbance. To evade Batman, I panicked and dived into a chemical toxic waste vat and swam through a pipe leading to the outside. In my horror, the chemicals radically changed my appearance. It permanently stained my skin to a color of chalk, ruby red lips and bright green hair giving me the trademark look that I have to this day. This metamorphisis combined with the senseless death of my wife and adopted new fugitive status, caused the loss of my grip on reality and the creation of the Joker, the clown prince of crime.
Edward Nigma told me about my past when he needed my protection from Hush. My wife was kidnapped and murdered by a police officer that was working with the same gangsters that wanted my help to rob Ace Chemical Processing Inc. This plot was to force my cooperation in the Red Hood robbery. He supposedly witness these events.
I somewhat recall my childhood as a young boy, and how I derived pleasure from killing small animals and collecting their bones. My father was insane and would beat my mother as I listened through the wall at night. One day a neighborhood boy discovered my makeshift graveyard and I had to take his life. I also murdered my abusive father and revealed to Batman that my mother was his old friend and confidante Leslie which to this day torments him.
But truly I don’t really remember my own past, just bits and pieces. I can ascertain that I did have a mentally challenged cousin who created the Joker gas and died early in my career. My Joker venom is my favorite weapon. Its a deadly poison that infects my victims with a ghoulish rictus grin as they die while laughing uncontrollably. This venom comes in many forms, from gas to darts to liquid poison, and has been my primary calling card.
Besides these few links to another life, my existence has been defined by the man who made me-Batman. My origins are largely unreliable. I’m not exactly sure what happened. Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another…..If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!
My victims have included men, women and even children. I had once gassed an entire kindergarten class. I shot Barbara Gordon and paralyzed her. I then kidnapped Commissioner Gordon and taunted him with enlarged photographs of his wounded daughter being undressed, in an attempt to prove that any emotionally and morally stable man can become insane after having one really bad day. I ridiculed him as an example of "the average man", a naive weakling doomed to insanity; but I failed in my attempts to drive Gordon insane as Batman saved the commissioner and even though distressed, Gordon keeps a sound mind. After this Batman tries one final time to reach me, offering to rehabilitate me. I natural refuse, but I show my appreciation by sharing a joke with Batman while he takes me back to Arkham.
In a rooftop confrontation, I manage to shoot Robin(Dick Grayson) before making a getaway attempt. Robin fall down the side of a building to his death. The media thinks that the young hero is dead, but although he has survived, Batman forbids him to become Robin again.
I murdered Sarah Essen Gordon, Commissioner Gordon's second wife, by shooting her in the head as she tries to protect the infants that I had kidnapped. I surrendered to Batman, but I continue to taunt Gordon, provoking the Commissioner to shoot me in the kneecap. I lament that I may be paralyzed, and then collapses with laughter as he "gets the joke" that Gordon has just avenged his daughter's paralysis.
I murdered Jason Todd, the second Robin. Jason Todd discovers that a woman who may be his birth mother is being blackmailed by me. She betrays her son to keep from having her medical supply thefts exposed, leading to Jason's brutal beating by me with a crowbar. I then locked Jason and his mother in the warehouse where the assault took place and blow it up just as Batman arrived. Batman finds Jason's lifeless body. Jason's death has haunted Batman ever since and has intensified his obsession with me.
I appeared on The David Endochrine Show. David cites mine total murder count as being around 600 people. I announced that I will kill everybody in the room, after which I do so. David Endochrine and guest Dr. Ruth Westheimer (the famous sex therapist) are among the victims.
Despite the fact that I killed enough people to get the death penalty hundred times over, I have always managed to be found not guilty by reason of insanity. I been placed in Arkham Asylum , which I escape at will. I allow myself to be captured so I can unwind at Arkham before my next scheme. A district attorney found a loop hole to one of my crimes and had me plead guilty and sentenced to death. Batman found the fact that I did not take credit for the crime in question out of character and soon discovered the bitter irony. I was about to be executed for the one series of murders I didn’t commit. I was in the electric chair and about to leave the earth when Batman managed to bring the true and guilty party to justice.
After recovering past reports unofficially filed in Arkahm, doctors speculate the truth regarding my sanity. That I am not a madman at all but am rather sane who cleverly hides behind a mask of madness to carry out a very calculated campaign of revenge. The theories were compiled by Dr. Harleen Quinzel during her internship. Quinzel was found mad and the files unadmittable into evidence against me. The doctors even propose that I planted the records for them to find. So once again I return to Arkham. Harleen Quinzel did ponder whether I may in fact be faking insanity as to avoid the death penalty. As she tries to treat me, I recount a tale of an abusive father and runaway mother to gain her sympathy. She falls hopelessly in love with me and allows me to escape Arkham several times before she is eventually exposed. Driven over the edge with obsession, she became Harley Quinn, my accomplice and on-and-off girlfriend.
Eventually I begin to truly care for Harley and decided to kill her instead. I drugged her and took her to a rocket ship. Before I launched Harley I told her that she had reminded me of my past memories and about feelings for someone I cared about. I ended by saying “And I HATE having those feelings!†I launched her and laughed while it flew away.
A program to capture the supervillains of the world, and permanently exile them to the distant planet Salvation via Boom Tube. As Luthor and myself arrive to the planet, I begin to lead one of the two factions that were formed. As Luthor begins working with Doctor Sivana, Professor Ivo, and General Immortus on a means of escaping Salvation, myself and Gorilla Grodd take exception to his leadership style, begin a battle, and eventually form a splinter group. I shot at Iron Cross (of the Aryan Brigade) through the head, and killed Splitshot (of the Superior Five). I engaged Lex Luthor in an all-out brawl. Just as I gain the upper hand, the planet is invaded by Parademons.
Sticking with the same story above, I savagely killed Psimon when he tried to convince the other villains that escape is impossible and they should try to build a new civilization. I disagreed and proceeded to bash his head in with a rock.
I once had Batman knocked out and considered unmasking and killing him. I decided not to because it wouldn’t have been a victory because it has to be public and astounding rather than a random accident.
I threatened to kill crime boss Rupert Thorne if he uncovered Batman's secret identity. Thorne had Hugo Strange discover Batman's identity, but, when Strange would not tell him who Batman was, Thorne had Strange murdered. I, who was also bidding for Batman's identity alongside the Penguin, told Thorne he was lucky Strange took whatever secrets he held with him to the grave; I explained that I was destined to defeat Batman in a manner worthy of my criminal reputation, and that no one else had the right.
During the return of new villain named Hush to Gotham City, Riddler hires me to save him, offering me the name of the crooked cop who killed my wife all those years ago. However, I attempt at revenge was cut short when Hush attacked with Prometheus, forcing me to retreat. After Jason Todd returns to life and takes over my old Red Hood identity, Jason asserts that I am not quite as crazy as I lead people to believe. He found me and exacted revenge, beating me savagely with a crowbar as I had beaten him with a crowbar. However, he kept me alive as a weapon. Later, he kidnapped me and ventured to Crime Alley where we met up with Batman. Jason attempted to force Batman to shoot me, angered at Batman's refusal to kill me despite what he'd done, but Batman refused, driving Jason away with a well-aimed batarang instead. With these going on, I detonated explosives that exploded the platform we were on, ending the fight.
I eventually returned to Gotham City with an army of trained pigeons and retaliated against Hush. I captured Hush and kept him sedated for three weeks, during this time I implanted a pacemaker into his body, effectively gaining control of his heart. At my mercy and unable to remove the device himself, Hush turned to the one man he felt he could trust, Bruce Wayne. Wayne consented to help Hush on the condition that he allow himself to be treated in and confined to Arkham Asylum. Hush agreed, and then immediately escaped after being told that the surgery had been a success. He was intercepted by Batman before he could be confront by me, and the two men debated the merits of a code against killing such vile criminals. Hush demanded that Batman allow him to do what he wouldn't, to finish me off once and for all. Batman seemed to agree and began to leave, but then revealed that he'd tricked Hush - the pacemaker was still in his body, and he'd been allowed to escape the asylum. At that moment I arrived, and Hush began begging Batman not to leave him.
Scarecrow is one of the prisoners that escaped from Arkham after Bane blows it up. He first attacks one of my henchmen, who tells Scarecrow that I am after the commissioner. Scarecrow goes to me and decides to become my partners in terrorizing the mayor. Soon we go to the sewers with the mayor, where Batman arrives. Scarecrow gasses him with fear toxic but instead Batman gets angry. Panicked, Scarecrow makes the water come into the sewers. Batman escapes with the mayor and me and Scarecrow escape as well. Later, at our hideout, I savagely beat Scarecrow with a chair after he tries to poison me.
I killed Alexander Luthor. Lex Luthor and myself find him hiding in an alley in Gotham City. I mutilate Alex's face with my acid-flower and lethal joybuzzer, while Lex taunts Alexander for his various mistakes, including underestimating Lex and excluding me from the Society (I was the only major villain not offered membership in the Society, due to my highly unpredictable nature). I then shot at Alexander point blank, killing him, while Lex mockingly asks, "Now who's stupid?".
During the holiday season, I captured Robin and drove him through the city in a minivan. While driving, I aimlessly ran over innocent bystanders, killed a fast food manager in cold blood, and subjected Robin to physical and psychological torture. Eventually, Robin was able to play me by starting a conversation about the Marx Brothers, which distracted me long enough for Robin to attempt an escape. Eventually he did, wrecking my minivan in the process.
Cletus Kasady and the myself are forced into a procedure in which a behavior modifying chip is placed in our heads, causing us to become sane and timid. Using his symbiote, Kasady removes his and mine chips, and we team-up. A disagreement over killing methods turns us against each other. After several attempts at killing me failed, Carnage is nearly killed by me in an explosion. Investigating what Batman believes to be Carnage's body, Batman is captured by him. Proclaiming he will kill Batman to all of Gotham City, Carnage is eventually defeated when Batman knocks him unconscious while he is distracted by me (who has threatened to unleash a killer virus into Gotham if Carnage robbed me of the privilege of murdering Batman).
I have poisoned Commissioner Gordon and apparently having beaten Batman to death while disabled children were forced to watch. I also shattered the Bat-signal. However, the Batman I had beaten was a fake, an ex-cop in a Batman suit. Moreover, he was not dead, and pulled a gun. Batman was in time to save me, but not before the bullet grazed my forehead.
I had to undergo skin grafting procedures due to injuries sustained during my last encounter with Batman that left me immobile and unable to speak correctly. While in intensive care at Arkham, I sent Harley Quinn to kill all of my old henchman with a new death gas in order to signal my forthcoming "rebirth". Harley lures Batman to Arkham to confront me. Instead, I attempted first to kill, then mutilate Harley Quinn in front of Batman. After a fight between myself and Batman, Harley shoots me, wounding me. Batman then brings me back into custody.
I believed to be dying and decided to have one last historic crime spree, infecting the inmates of 'The Slab,' a prison for super criminals, with Joker venom to escape. With plans to infect the entire world, I set the super-powered inmates loose to cause mass chaos in their 'jokerized' forms. Meanwhile, I tried to ensure my "legacy" by defacing statues in mine image. The entire United States declares war on me under the orders of President Lex Luthor. In response, I sent my minions to kill the President. Black Canary discovers that mine doctor modified the CAT scan to make it appear that I had a fatal tumor in an attempt to subdue me with the threat of death. Harley Quinn, angry at mine attempt to get her pregnant without marrying her, helps the heroes create an antidote to the Joker poison and return the super villains to their normal state. Believing Robin had been eaten by Killer Croc in the ensuing madness, Nightwing eventually catches up with me and beats me to death. To keep Nightwing from having blood on his hands, Batman resuscitates me.
I stole Mister Mxyzptlk's reality altering power, and remade the entire world into a twisted caricature, with everyone in it stuck in a loop, repeating the same patterns over and over. The conflict focuses on the fate of Batman in this world, with me torturing and killing batsy every day, only to bring him back to life and do it over and over again. Superman's powers will allows him to fight off mine influence enough to make contact with the weakened Mxyzptlk, who along with a less-powerful Spectre, encourages Superman to work out mine weakness before reality is destroyed by mine misuse of Mxyzptlk's power. As time runs out, Superman realizes that I still cannot erase Batman from existence, as I totally defines Superman by his opposition to the Dark Knight; if I can't even erase one man, how can I destroy the universe? My control shattered, Mxyzptlk and the Spectre manage to reconstruct reality from the moment I disrupted everything, but Batman is left broken from experiencing multiple deaths. Superman has to steal Batman's memories so that he can go on, transferring them to me and leaving me catatonic. Natural I bounced back and snapped out of it, because it is a comic book after all.
I casually killed Mr. Freeze but he was hastily resurrected because Mr. Freeze was enthusiastically accepted by fans.
In Arkham Asylum, when I was talking with the other incarcerated criminals, they suggested unmasking Batman, I told them that the mask is his real face. When super-villains want to scare each other, they tell Joker stories.
