About Me

(1932-1963)I was born into a middle class family in 1932 in Boston Memorial Hospital. My father, to whom i was close, died when i was only eight years old. Before his death he was a well respected entomologist at BU. My mother raised me Unitarian Christian but still I had mixed feelings about religion my entire life.I published my first poem in The Boston Herald at age eight and by the summer after my third year of college worked as a guest editor at Mademoiselle magazine. I graduated Smith Colege with honors in 1955.And married my Husband Ted Hughes the very next year.A few years later i gave birth to a beautiul baby girl named Freida and just two years later Nicolas. Unfortuately it was around this time that my mariage to Ted came to an end. Leaving me to care for two small children in a flat in london.During my life I crossed paths with people such as Anne Sexton and Robert Lowell as well as W.S. Merwin. All of which became either life long friends or great inspirations to me throughout my career.I killed myself on Monday February 11, 1963. It was my second attempt at suicide (the first being during my junior year in college). My final act was to leave two mugs of milk and buttered bread for my children before I stuck my head into the gas oven.
