Manjani (the novel by Freedom Speaks)

About Me

My name is Manjani Jackson and I'm a character in a book written by Freedom Speaks Diaspora. When the story begins, I am 17 years old (it’s 1996) and I'm on a mission to teach my deaf, dumb, and blinda brothas and sistahs that they be actin’ like puppies in class, letting teachers lie to them about his-story. They even pledge allegiance to the flag! My mother June was anti-revolutionary so I couldn't see how she ended up with my father Lee, who hung with this revolutionary cat, Bruce, who ran the RPFBF (Revolutionary Party for Black Folks). I had two older sisters, Aniba & Kesi (but Kesi didn't live with us) and a bratty younger brother named Jered. Then there was Pauline, the bioch...but I don't want to talk about her here. You're gonna have to read the book to find out about her. All in all, the novel talks about my path as a revolutionary, and everything I had to go through to find my place in the struggle. And by the way, I’m sexually active in the book, so if that turns you off, I'm sorry. That's just Manjani!
Manjani Jackson is a mouthy New York teenager who believes her life's purpose is to lead her "deaf, dumb, and blind" brothas and sistahs into The Revolution. On one of the worst days of her life, tragedy strikes, landing her at an all white school. Although she is working on getting along, the racist students make it impossible, and before long, the administration crosses the line, forcing Manjani into political action. Then one of her events gets out of hand, sending Manjani on the run. Her journey leads to a place where bittersweet lessons about liberation are learned as her comrades turn against her. Only tough love, spiritual revelations, and self-determination will help her find her place in the struggle.
Freedom Speaks (Diaspora) is an accomplished poet and writer. She studies naturopathic medicine and chakra healing in her spare time.
