Carter Wood comes from Louisville, Kentucky and has a voice that’s more Sheryl Crow than Patsy Cline. But her yearning songs drenched in lonesome pedal-steel make her country pedigree clear. Her songwriting ability has already been recognized in Nashville and George Strait had a hit with her ’Don’t Make Me Come Over There And Love You’, co-written with Jim Lauderdale.
But "Unspoken" has nothing to do with mainstream country. She’s far too real and honest for that. "Unspoken" rises above the generic on the strength of Woods’ full, honest and fiercely pumping heart. While two outstanding producers - Michael McCarthy (Trail of Dead) and Doug Lancio (Patty Griffin) - split
duty at the helm of the project, it is a wonderful, fluid musical affair
with feels ranging from the lilting "Pretty Girls Drink for Free" to the
Brit-pop of "Turned Away." The superior cast of musicians only enhance her thoughtful verses and distinctive voice, which exudes both girlish innocence and womanly sensuality and grace.
With careful attention to detail, Wood crafts melodies that allows the forces of passionate pop and rural roots to alternately share the limelight. This is music with drive, warmth and major-league appeal without sacrificing depth.
