Brent Lee and The Freedom Band

About Me

Brent Lee and the freedom band-- reflective sounds from the past.
As late as the 60's with a touch of today! The group came together over the course of 10 yrs.. The pictures on the "Influence Slide Show" are former friends and players over the years that have contributed to this project. I would like to thank each and every one of these great players and performers for their time and talent. They love Rock-N-Roll. With a lot of help from above, Mickey Cantrell became a force within the music on percussion. Mickey has a drive, created from a back ground of playing with a lot of heavies. His attitude is second to none. When it comes to playing his music, I can't help myself but to say that he understands the vision of what a group is all about, the magic and chemistry that makes it all happen.
The bands root core is about freedom and how it plays a part to express in every way. Simply getting behind an idea and running with it. The genre of classic rock and blues , it really lets us be free. Combining real life stories of everyday life, just getting people to relate to something they have experienced is what its all about. The "Freedom Band" is an extension of a combination of all great performers and entertainers from times past, the tradition moves on. So we are trying to keep the dream of freedom alive through the gift of music. Performing in and around the south east of the USA is awesome. We meet people from everywhere. The crowds are great and the fans are the drive and energy of the "Freedom Band". We love the excitement that the venues create. We look forward to sharing Freedom through music and performing--- so lets feel the rhythm of good times.

We are hopeful that you can be a part of freedom, and share music where ever you are.
Sincerely,
Brent Lee and The Freedom Band
Hello Everybody!
I would just like to say music is one of my ways to express myself. Story telling through music is something I have always had a passion for, and the stories are not always my own. The lyrics and melody may not make sense to me, but I have found that in the end of each song, there seems to be someone's story in it.
Since I met up with the Freedom Band the songs have come out to be better than I planned. These guys "ROCK". They have a real feel for life, and a vibe that won't stop.

SINGER & SONGWRITER, LEAD & RHYTHM GUITAR VOCALS: Brent Lee
Born in 1963, later in the years, the desire of performing and composing would be a great part of Brent Lee. It all started in the early 70's. Always hanging out with the older crowd, his influences came from the impact of the 60's artist such as, Alice Cooper, Jethro Tull, Hendrix, Blue Oyster Cult and the list goes on. Not only did rock influence the style in writing and performing, his love for music mattered in other genra of music, gospel, country, blues, jazz and even artist as Frank Sinatra. So the heart and soul of Brent Lee's influences spanned far and wide.

Born in Hobbs New Mexico, later he moved in 1972 to Dallas, TX. In his early years in finding himself as a writer, there were a lot of great local entertainers making their music, Pat Benetar, ZZ Top and Stevie Ray Vaughn were doing their thing to name a few. There Brent Lee with the big sound of Texas on his side, still composing his music and over the years the style and sound of Brent Lee was being created. Later in 1984, the music moved him to Tulsa, OK where he continued to write and perform. Tulsa was no place to strangers for rock and roll. Johnny's Place on Riverside Drive was a drop in for great artist and other venues and hot spots.

Brent Lee now being thrusts from the big city was a big change in culture for fast living and hustle and bustle in Dallas to the laid back living of OK. Tahlequah and Haskell, OK held Brent Lee's family ties and roots. Good down home people with a lot to say. Everything happening around Brent always meant something and it came out in his writing. I asked Brent to give me in his own words what it was all about. Quote: "We are all here for a short time and I have found that music is one of the strongest things that move people and it sure moved me. It is a great honor and privilege to perform and sing and the rewards are great especially for the fans and as well for myself." End Quote. After sitting with him I felt the true spirit of a person dedicated and articulated in who and where he was going.

In 1992, Brent Lee moved to Atlanta, GA on his quest to tell his story playing in and around Atlanta from festivals to clubs, churches, homeless shelters, prisons and anywhere he could get a foot in the door. He's still today bent on taking his band to the top. Quote: "There is no reason we can't, we have the best of the best and the rest will just be history." End Quote.

Now today in 2009, the bands drive and vision, which they all share, is a common goal to get behind the artist and make it happen. The Freedom Band have veteran seasoned players and their commitment level is second to none. With God's help there is nothing that they can't do. The all original music that they play, written and composed by Brent Lee, combined with the talent backed by the best band ever, TFB, truly is a match made in heaven.

LEAD GUITAR & RHYTHM GUITAR: Keith Jones
Keith started learning to play the guitar at the age of four. He has played all genres of music from Gospel to Blues to Motown.

He played with Uncle Ed at the Music barn in his early years. He was a member of the Christian Heirs for two years and played all over the Southeastern United States. Later he played with Ken Jackson and Country Choice. He and his family moved to Oklahoma in the early 80's where he joined the country band, "Branded", and played in clubs in Oklahoma and Texas.

After returning to Georgia, he started playing with Quarter Till. He played with them for fifteen years in the Athens and Atlanta area's. He later joined Double Trouble and played at Joyland and other venues in the Florida area.

He also played for a short time with the "Suwanee River Boys", a gospel bluegrass group. He then joined another country band, "Classic Country" and played at the Newborn Opry and the Stella Parton Benefit for Battered Women.

Keith was inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame November 2007.

Later in 2008, Keith Jones became the third member and a driving force within The Freedom Band.

DRUMS: Mickey Cantrell
Born in 1944 in Atlanta, GA, it didn't take long for Mickey to find his talent, you can say he was born with sticks in his hand. Mickey found himself playing drums in a local beach house at age 15. He knew what he wanted. As he developed his style it would later pave the way for the success of Mickey Cantrell. Quote: "In the early 60's I went to a concert at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium. There it was exactly what I wanted, to be the best rock drummer. In front of my eyes, Hendrix, Janice Joplin, Ted Nugent, and Vanilla Fudge decided the path I would take as a drummer." End quote. A rock drummer was born.

Now finding his place Mickey played in and around Atlanta with great acts in Underground Atlanta, Stewart Avenue also played top forty soul with the legendary Billy Joel Royal and toured many years with Ronnie Milsap. Mickey was well on his way. After considerable thoughts, his footsteps led him to California where he played his heart out with groups like English Rock Bands, Monlith and Sticky Wicked. During the punk era his style was captured even more playing with groups such as Filthy McNasty. His career as a drummer found him laying down his cool beats at record plant studios, and when he wasn't in a session you could find him playing at a gig at the Troubadour Club.

In 1982 , after fifteen years of retirement, Mickey wasn't done yet. He was led back to his roots in Atlanta, GA. The love for music never left him. The sticks return to his hands playing again in local shows and commanding the house band at Leftys in Buford, Mickey was back. But this time it was different. There was something he knew that wasn't done yet.

In 2007, Brent Lee and Mickey crossed paths. There the Freedom Band was born. The common thread of raw talent between these two would be the magnet to "The Freedom Band aka TFB".
