Born March 3, 1987 (the same date Ruthless Records was born), Marvin "Knife" Sotelo's early reputation on the streets of East Los Angeles, California, is a gangster undetermined to apply his knowledge to a legitimate game. He dropped out of high school in the 12th grade but refused to allow that to impede on his success.
In the late '90's he turned to music, and along with Joaquin Hernandez (later known as DJ Jack Vicious) started a street punk band named Urban Chaos (formerly UrBin Chaos, Bin for East L.A. being a dump) during the new millennium, the original Urban Chaos lineup has since broke apart and management of the band fell on Knife since 2003 and has took on an experimental turn. They are currently the house band for his "Marilyn Manson type" shows under his original moniker "Knife" Sotelo, in turn Knife created a Nu-Metal band without even knowing it.
As a soloist, Knife's career was more than average even as far as breaking away from the music industry to join the rosters of the International Fight League for a brief period. He launched Neighborhood Records, he reorganized A Dark Philosophy Records (ADP Records) and by 2005 had over a 7 dozen albums being released continuously, most of which are now out of print albums and mixtapes which can only be found in Rasputin Records and other participating chains. Expanding business, Knife had signed more acts especially Metal bands. The most notable were Death Metal band Absentation and Industrial Metal band Khaos Faktory. During the summer of 2007, Knife unexpectedly got signed to Satanic label ADP Records and released Money Sex Power, it made a big buzz leaving a lot of people puzzled about his affiliations with the Satanic community.
"Can't Stop", "The Boss", "On A Sunday Night". His voice fueled a legion of hits. He later joined with a few Gospel rappers in a stop religious discrimination campaign fueled by a single "We Are One". Flanked by disgruntled co-workers, Knife broke down the doors of mass exposure previously concealed to all forms of rap music.
As a businessman, Knife built a solid commodity with the ADP Records label in turn when the original founders tried to release Knife from the label instead took the label from them because apparently the original owners never got their proper copyrights. Among his signings: Garfan ("Had To Die"), The Mad Poet ("A Spartan In Wake", "Liber of the Goat", "Of Gods And Rain"), Rhyme God, The Larch, Feralbeest, Kasper Kane, B.G. Illuminati, Nat Vin G, Dru, and Umbra Blasphemia. His ability to manufacture and distribute these acts was on the strength of his own persona, which he was marketing by 2008 as a host of the "SoSatan Radio Show" (66.6 XM/Los Angeles). As an on-air personality Knife gave audiences access to his acts, vibed with his fans, and raised his own stakes as a music crusader.
Few knew the man behind the scenes. His charitable nature benefited such organizations as the National Coalition for the Homeless, the Musicians Assistance Program (MAP), Do Something, and the Foundation of AIDS Research. Some of those donations lived through his anonymity, others took on a life of their own.
By the time he was 21, Knife had survived a swirl of controversy. His "Maravilla 2K8" lyrics had come to life from his age to his political allegiances coming under scrutiny, but he continued to sell records to his thousand-plus fan base. Even a conspiracy to assassinate him (uncovered by the usually antagonistic FBI), left Knife nonplussed with only an even stronger desire to reunite and record with the original members of his Neighborhood Records. However part of that goal remains unrealized.
By the time Knife had released his Money Sex Power album, Knife had learned how to push buttons. The album hit indie charts and cuts like "Wut It Do" (featuring X-Raided's Mr. Lil Man, who also produced) continued to fuel the respect of free speech. Knife's music was raw, it was unbridled and above all, it was validation for those who lived the lives of the people he portrayed on wax.
Finally, Knife's compilation album Knife N Tha Neighborhood was the one that best captured Knife's growing cynicism and tongue-in-cheek humor. The inclusion of "The Message", an old time invitation to "the message" recited between scratching and "Chop" style mix delivery, is still good for a laugh. The other album cut, "Can U Run Away", is another example of Knife making light of even his own recording persona. Till this day Knife is still breaking all kinds of boundaries and sees no limit.
