Naima A. DawsonPlaywright, published poet, screenwriter, stunt actress and educator, Naima Dawson has been dedicated to the arts for more than 15 years. With her Masters in Fine Arts from Columbia College in Chicago, Ms. Dawson has created her own artistic path, away from traditional theater. Author of Hot Water Pancakes, a book of poetry, she has landed roles in Hollywood as a stunt double, has been a featured poet in the national selling journal, CPR (Columbia Poetry Review), along with producing more than 10 completed theatrical productions from her own budget. In her hometown of Chicago she has become an icon representing progressive women of color in the arts.In 2002 Naima firmly planted herself in the theater world, creating a space where she could breathe a different life onto the stage to a larger audience looking for something new outside of traditional theater. Looking to develop plays that would entice adults who were non-theater goers, Ms. Dawson began to fuse everyday life with story line common to sit-com television. A fan of all the great soap operas of the 80’s, Naima is most intrigued by making light of human emotions and how people react to tragedy.As seen in her first major production in 2006 housed at the Apollo Chicago Theater, Living Room Secrets was the first soap opera to unfold one episode at a time live on stage. In her first year with only four shows under her belt her production grossed 23,900. By 2007, attending audience members were begging for new episodes and new plays form the writer. With a successful soap opera well into its 4th episode, Naima set out to produce her first live sketch comedy show, YOUR CALL again at the Apollo Chicago Theater. Already in its’ 4th installment, she pushed to create a live show that would give the audience a throwback feel of some of her favorite shows such as SNL and In Living Color all rolled into one hilarious show. With her followers continuing to pack the 400 seat venue, Naima once again had produced another successful production.With her ability to weave in and out of dialogue and keep the people laughing Naima has expanded her writing to the big screen with her first film short, Never to Late to Say I do. Under her new company, All Hype Picture Entertainment she pushes to create the same greatness that she does on stage on film.Plate Half Full is a story taken from actual occurrences. It speaks to one woman’s desperate attempts to find her perfect soul mate. She’s a successful single woman willing to sacrifice her dignity in her attempt to find the right man that will say, “I Doâ€.
