About Me

From the beautiful coastal waters of North Carolina , Deatrice Suggs loves to travel and sing. She has been singing since before she can remember whether it was entertaining relatives in the middle of the living room floor or performing in school musicals. Extending from a family of musicians, her father played acoustic guitar and her grandmother played piano, so it’s no wonder that Deatrice began playing the clarinet at the tender age of eight. According to her father at the time, the clarinet was too boring for her taste, so she began piano lessons under the instruction of Denise Dupree. It didn’t take Deatrice long to realized that her passion was singing, so she then began voice lesson from vocal instructor, Sue Ann Culp (AP Theatrical Productions). While in high school, she participated in Honors Chorus and many state solo competitions where she received three Superior ratings and two Excellent ratings. In 1998, she began singing with Eastern Bull Drum, a traditional intertribal Native American Drum based in Greenville, North Carolina. Since her own ethnic mix is Native American and African American, she had no problems adapting from her custom style of singing. Eastern Bull performs at festivals, civic organizations, adult care centers, state and federal correction centers, and pow-wows throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Ohio with hopes to spread their wings to California. Eastern Bull recorded “Pow-Wow Voices” featuring John Blackfeather in 1998 and released "Eastern Bull Live & Kickin" in March 2000. The drum released "Songs of the Circle" in July 2007. Deatrice loves music of all genres and future plans are to start vocal training sessions once again. She was once told by a vocal instructor that you never “arrive", you can always learn a thing or two more than you already know. Vocal training is never ending...........

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

The one person that I really wanted to meet was Maysa Leak. I love Maysa's voice and style of singing. I think she is one the most true genuine singers out there today. About nine years ago at the Hampton Theater in Hampton Virginia, I got a chance to meet her after a performance. It was a breath taking experience and since, she has become a very dear friend. I've also had the pleasure of meeting Boney James, Najee, Tom Browne, Ledisi, Gary and Greg Grainger, Will Downing, Meritxell, Benji Porecki, Blues Webb, and Kim Waters. Incognito is my absolute favorite band and I've always wanted to meet Jean Paul Maunick (Bluey) and the Incognito band members. Their music is so positive and their sound is like no other. Sade is also one of my favorite singers. I love her voice and the energy she brings to the stage. Let's not forget about the superstar himself "Prince" or N'Dea Davenport and Chaka. Word can't even began to describe. Other artist that I've always wanted to meet are Jocelyn Brown, Jimmy Sommers, Jill Scott, Patti Austin, Anita Baker, Lalah Hathaway, Karen Bernod, Joe Sample, Amel Larrieux, Vikter Duplaix, Norman Brown, Marion Meadows, Brian Culbertson, Jamiroquai, Michael McDonald, Daryl Hall, Marcus Miller, Stevie Wonder, Rachelle Ferrell and so many others.
