The Carnal Theatre Project was first conceived in the mind of Spaz Walden after readings of Artaud, Brecht, and Grotowski. The concept is simply stated to do a text-based play without dialogue. The purpose of which is to emphasize not what is said, but how it is said. Through the actor's use of body language, physical intentions, facial gestures, and vocal tones, in combination with minimalist sets and symbolic lighting and music, an audience should be able to connect with and interpret a story. This is a break from the contemporarily conventional methods of kissing Shakespeare's ass by emphasizing dialogue as the great equalizer in communication. It is the goal of this project to reawaken the humanity that a society dependent on technology has lost. We are all virtually connected with a world wide web, cell phones, and getting just about anything you desire at any time. The western world is spoiled and needs to rekindle its primal desires, fears, wants, and needs in a way that is not quite ritualistic, not quite civilized. I propose a theatre that communicates on an emtional, instinctual, and intellectual level, and yet can be understood by a child. Carnal Theatre will seem so basic that people will observe and wonder how we strayed so far from something so connectable to all life.
