Shaheen Alikhan, troupe leader, has been teaching and performing between Charlottesville and Nelson County since 2001, in addition to continuing to perform in Washington, DC and the Northern Virginia area as a member of Hips Accepted. Fata Morgana's unique style derives its primary influence from several different countries and cultures, mostly historical and folkloric. Members of Fata Morgana Bellydance regularly go to workshops and train with dancers and troupes such as Baraka Mundi, Zafira,Zaleh Fareshteh, Leila Haddad, Gypsy Caravan, Turku, Suhaila Salimpour, and many others. Workshop focuses include isolations, spins, Rom-style dancing, skirtwork, veil, sword, and other bellydance props, such as baskets and candles. Classes on etiquette and history are also in the repertoire. Band Members: Shaheen Alikhan, troupe leader, has been studying bellydance with numerous teachers since 1998, and founded Fata Morgana in 2002. In addition to dancing she rides, practices archery, and studies mythology and plantlore. Lindsey Osborne, a founding member, is a serious equestrian in addition to being a very talented musician. She has studied ballet, modern, and jazz in addition to bellydance, and is also a member of Fire in the Belly. Sara Taylor has been studying bellydance since 2001, and is a founding member of Fata Morgana Bellydance. She is an avid equestrian, and owns Rapunzel's Coffee and Books in Lovingston. Ashley Ogden has studied numerous forms of dance including ballet, jazz, and modern for the majority of her life before coming to bellydance in 2001, and can still remember her first performance piece, 'I am a Dancing Poodle', from when she was two. She is a founding member of Fata Morgana Bellydance and a passionate equestrian. Jaime Armstrong has studied bellydance with several teachers, and is a member of Fire in the Belly and Belly Souk in addition to Fata Morgana Bellydance. She is currently taking time off to devote to her new son, Alexander. Newest member Kelley Wood, also an equestrian, studied bellydance under Anthea Poole for several years, and performed in Northern Virginia as a member of NOVA Folkloric Dance Company. Fata Morgana is honored to welcome her.
