Shaheen Alikhan, troupe leader, has been teaching and performing between Charlottesville and Nelson County since 2001, in addition to continuing to perform in Washington, DC and the Northern Virginia area as a member of Hips Accepted. Fata Morgana's unique style derives its primary influence from several different countries and cultures, mostly historical and folkloric. Members of Fata Morgana Bellydance regularly go to workshops and train with dancers and troupes such as Baraka Mundi, Zafira,Zaleh Fareshteh, Leila Haddad, Gypsy Caravan, Turku, Suhaila Salimpour, and many others. Workshop focuses include isolations, spins, Rom-style dancing, skirtwork, veil, sword, and other bellydance props, such as baskets and candles. Classes on etiquette and history are also in the repertoire.
