Cook It Steve!

About Me

Steve Cook is a professional drummer based out the Jackson, Mississippi area. Like many young drummers his first kit was trash cans and kitchen pot lids from around the house. A student of bandleader Sonny Hill at age 10, he was playing his debut drum set gigs at age 12. By the 8th grade Steve was performing and competing statewide with the High School band, a student of both Drum Corp and Symphonic Band percussion. But it's the groove of the drum kit as applied to songs that really captured him. Steve's always been a music fan first and that has drawn him not only into drumming, but also writing, arranging, and music production.
Steve's had the good fortune to be born and live in an area rich in culture and talent, the melting pot of modern American music, Mississippi. While known as ground zero for the Blues, Mississippi's Gospel Music heritage has also heavily influenced not only Steve's musical taste, but his character as well. Flourishing in this geographical and artistic epicenter, Mississippi's musicians also draw influence from important music centers in the region being situated equally north to South between Memphis and New Orleans, and equally East to West between Austin and Nashville. Privileged to work with many tremendous talents from the region, this environment has helped to forge Steve's unique playing style, augmented rather than dominated by the Jazz, Latin, African and Caribbean influences of his studies at the University Of Miami's Drum Set Specialty Track of their Studio Music & Jazz Performance Degree. With years of experience playing live and in the studio, Steve continues to hone his craft with consistency and integrity, serving the music with a palette of rhythmic flavors and spices large enough to "Cook" up something tasty no matter what the venue.
Surpisingly affordable and located just minutes from Jackson-Evers International Airport, use the "Send Message" button above to contact Steve now about available dates for your next Recording, Live Performance, or Clinician project local or abroad.
