About Me

A LITTLE ABOUT ME:

I'm just a simple guy who lives out in the country and plays a few old tunes on the fiddle.

Band Website: www.highlonesomeband.com
Band Members: I fiddle with the High Lonesome bluegrass band from the Columbia, South Carolina area. Here's a recent shot of our group:

Left to right: Ashley Carder (fiddle), Stefan Custodi (guitar and vocals), Chris Boutwell (mandolin and vocals), Dave Holder (bass and vocals), Allen Fisher (banjo and vocals)

Influences: Homer "Pappy" Sherrill, Vernon Riddle, Bobby Hicks, Bo Norris, Carlin Padgett, my mother Shirley Carder, Benny Martin, Kenny Baker, Bill Monroe, Tommy Jackson, Chubby Wise, Paul Warren, Curly Fox, Howdy Forrester, Tommy Jarrell, J.P. Fraley, ......

Here are a couple pictures of me and my old friend, the late Homer "Pappy" Sherrill, who was Snuffy Jenkins' fiddle playing partner in the Hired Hands (earlier known as Byron Parker's Hillbillies back in the 1930s and 40s). Pappy was my fiddling mentor. He was a wonderful gentleman and I spent many hours back in the 1980s sitting on his back porch fiddling with him or backing him on guitar.

In 2003 with my old friend and another fiddling mentor, Vernon Riddle. Vernon is a great Texas style old time fiddler who spent 20 years in Texas in the Air Force and learned directly from Eck Robertson, Benny Thomasson, the Solomon brothers, and others. I spent a lot of time with Vernon back in the 1980s, and would back him at fiddlers conventions on guitar.

Below is a picture with legendary fiddler Bobby Hicks, when Bobby took me to a picking party at Wayne Erbsen's house. Bobby is one of my fiddling heroes and my definition of the ultimate bluegrass fiddler.

With one of my favorite old time fiddlers, Tommy Jarrell, in 1984. I will never forget picking with him at his house, backing him on guitar while he fiddled those old tunes of his like only he could. He was quite a storyteller too!

Sounds Like: Me, with maybe a little bit of Pappy and Vernon mixed in there somewhere.

Some fiddle tunes with an old time flavor

A couple days ago I walked into Best Buy to kill time during lunch hour.  When I left, I walked out with a home audio studio software package and a supposedly decent quality microphone.  Yes...
