…right before they ate him
Their partnership beginning at odds, Paul Hawkins and Matt Douglas had three things in common that would lead them to have a number of “musical adventuresâ€;
1. No Money
2. A love of the guitar
3. An infatuation with their home state of Oregon
The latter of these eventually inspiring the title of their latest project- right before they ate him- the name was pulled from an obscure quote out of the northwestern cult-classic “The Gooniesâ€. The lack of significance in the name itself (other than showing pride in their roots) in ways defines the goal of their music, “it is what it isâ€. Having realized that all modern music is essentially plagiarism, rather than try to fit into any one genre they decided to just play whatever comes naturally, no matter how odd or simple it may be.
Both began honing their cooperative skills early on by playing their acoustics deep within the echoing light rail tunnels during the vacant hours of the night. They eventually graduated to the standard “garage band thingâ€, playing with a revolving set of members in various styles ranging from “old-school acoustic rock†to “modern heavy metalâ€, the biggest contrast came when Paul formed the now-defunct rap group “Baselineâ€. Spending a number of years experimenting with unique hip-hop beats inspired by zombie flicks and video games, Paul eventually got Matt to come around to the idea of playing within the “open format†style where there was no “standard rock formula†to adhere to.
Taking the approach of “the best idea has yet to comeâ€, they toil amidst their increasingly grown-up lives to make the music that will scratch their never-ending creative itch under the guise of ...right before they ate him.
