Sydney Salmon has been singing and playing Reggae Music in Kinston Jamaica from John was a bwoy during
the nineteen eighties as a teenager. He later migrated to New York USA and became a banker on Wall Street working for Chemical Bank at 55 Water Street which later merged with the now renowned Chase Bank. Syd as he is afectionately called, became a member of the 12 Tribes of Israel converting to the Orthodox Faith. He then worked with the organisation music body producing hits such as "Africa Is Our home" "I Wonder" and Shashemane On My Mind". As a devout Rastafarian, he
could no longer deny himself and took the bold step to leave his
comfortable life in New York and repatriated to Ethiopia in 2001.
He decided that he would concentrate on playing Reggae Music and
to spread the message of Universal Justice and One Love working and fundraising for the Jamaican Rastafarian Development Community in Shashemane. Sydney founded the
Imperial Majestic Reggae Band and through diligence and determination
Syd has built up a sizable following in Ethiopia playing in all the
popular clubs and a staple on major promotions.
Having learned the Amharic language, Sydney weaved his way into
the hearts of Reggae loving Ethiopians with his unique brand of
Reggae Music that incorporates traditional Ethiopian styles
combined with a strong rhythm section on top of a hypnotic and
pulsating Jamaican drum and bass. With quite a few hit tunes such
as ‘Ethiopia is Calling, ‘Chica Chica’ and ‘Mama Yeah’ and much more.
He is currently on tourin Europe. Sydney Salmon is well on his
way to becoming a huge international success."Ethiopia is Calling" is not only the message delivered by Sydney Salmon, it is also the title track of his new album release on the Orthodox Muzik label.The message is clear that Babylon is falling and Ethiopia, she is calling. Born in Kingston Jamaica, Sydney migrated with his mother to the United States of America at age 22 .There his interest in the musical arts was rekindled and he went on to study voice and instruments mainly the guitar at the Queens conservetory of music and Kings Community College.His leadership skills manifested when he became the lead singer for the SoulJahs band. The union produced such classics as "I Wonder"on the Sure Shot record label operated under famous manager George Golding. The group toured extensively along the east coast on the college circuits; from Canada, Bufaloa, Woodstock, Albany, Watertown, Boston,Rhode Island, New Haven Geneva New York, New York City, Syracuse, Redding Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Delaware, Washington DC, Virginia, Virginia Beach, Baltimore, North Carolina, South Carolina, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland Ohio to many other places.Hailing from the tribe of Simeon, Sydney became a member of the orthodox faith, Twelve Tribes of Israel and joined its music body as guitarist and lead singer. He performed with many other orthodox artists including the legendary Dennis Brown, Beres Hammond, Freddie McGregor, Half-Pint, Sugar Minot, Sister Carol, Shine head, and The Abyssinians to name a few. In September 2000, Sydney released Shashemane on My Mind, a single that stirred emotions after visiting Shashemane Ethiopia. All proceeds from the single went to the Shashemane Development Building Project.Taking reggae to another level, Sydney again migrated with his family to the land that he sing about in most of his songs, Ethiopia, and formed the Imperial Majestic Band. He performed at the 60th birthday celebration for the Honorable Robert Nesta Marley in Addis Ababa as well as the Africa Unite show in Shashemane Ethiopia. The band backed the notable Rita Marley, Bob Andy and many others performing on the event. He shared the stage with top Ethiopioan and African artists such as Angelique Kidjo, Teddy Afro, Mohammed Ahmed, Zenebech"cherekeresh" Tadesse. Sydney is truly a legend in his time and this latest release will feed your mind and soul.
