Sounds Like: Despite having the difficult job of opening proceedings on a busy night in the bustling White Room, north east-based trio The Blitz Evra stole the show from their older, more experienced counterparts, Blakfish, who headlined the regular live music showcase in the Holmeside venue. Judging on those in attendance, they’ve already established a loyal following thanks to their online presence, but their punchy brand of contemporary rock made believers out of others watching. (Particularly one over-zealous reveller who hijacked the dance-floor for the Hartlepool outfit’s stirring rendition of “Moonrunnersâ€, an anthemic call to arms channelling early 00s favourites At The Drive-In, only with an emphasis on the synth/electronic sound that currently populates a thriving guitar scene.) Their set was littered with a vast array of potential hits way beyond expectations set by their billing, and the visible joy they brought to the faces of the audience via their more unashamed indie pop efforts was an encouraging sight. Layered with infectious hooks and intelligent writing, The Blitz Evra rise above a worryingly resurgent new age shoegazer scene with immediate aural impact, and are certain to be a live hot ticket over the coming months.- The Crack
