SCROLL DOWN FOR INFO ON:
A) Why Master. What is Mastering?
B) Stem Mastering vs. Conventional Mastering
C) Mastering a Record, Singles or Both?
D) How to Prepare Your Music to Send
E) How to Send and Pay
A) WHY MASTER. WHAT IS MASTERING?
after your song is done being mixed, mastering is the final step that is taken to make your mix sound the same volume and EQ as what's on the radio or available in stores. once mastered, people will be able to listen to your music on their stereo and not need to turn it up or adjust the EQ when your song comes on because your volume and frequencies will be at similar levels to all other professional recordings.
B) STEM MASTERING VS. CONVENTIONAL MASTERING
stem mastering is a more effective way of mastering. you would send me 6 separate tracks per each song: kick, bass, snare, all other drums and percussion, all other instruments and vocals. this will allow me to be a lot more effective by applying the right effects directly to the right sounds instead of having to apply all my work to everything at the same time. (for example, i might want to add some lows to the bass but not the kick or add some extra compression to the snare but not the vocals.) this accuracy can only be achieved through stem mastering.
stem mastering can be more necessary on some mixes than others. if you're in doubt as to which form of mastering to use, send me an mp3 of one of your mixes and i'll let you know what i recommend.
C) MASTERING A RECORD, SINGLES OR BOTH?
if you're releasing an album then it would be ideal to have me master all of your songs at the same time so that i can make them flow together as much as possible.
if you're just releasing singles one at a time and don't plan to release these on the same CD then, of course, you can send them at anytime.
if you're releasing singles that will eventually go on an album then it gets a little tricky because i might master the songs to sound great individually but they might not flow together as well as if i had done them all at once. the best way to handle this is to try to send me as many of the songs together when possible and to let me know that there are more to come so i can save them for you and check them against each other as they come in.
D) HOW TO PREPARE YOUR MUSIC TO SEND
for mastering:
- files should be WAV or AIFF (NOT MP3) (ideally 24 bit, but 16 is fine too. any sample rate is fine but i will convert to 88.2 then bounce to 44.1)
- there should be no compression or limiting on the master fader (compression and limiting is fine on individual tracks just not on the overall mix.)
- make sure the master fader is not clipping (in the red), (if it is, turn down all the other tracks by the same amount until your master fader isn't clipping any more.)
- put all your songs (even if it's just one) in one folder and title the folder with the artist's name.
