PISTON DRIVEN

Few things in life you can be certain of: BIRTH & DEATH, maybe pay the taxman, (NAH, FUCK’EM!) but there are things you CAN’T plan, & that’s fate. You either have to face it or die trying. Joey ‘Smoke’ Wilkinson embarked on a project while working with his band Saint Caine. Saint Caine, being another incarnation of the Universal Records Artists Dropbox, had just finished doing a tour with Godsmack & was winding down. He was feeling unfulfilled, so he reached out to fellow local musicians to just jam regularly. What he didn’t expect was hammering out great songs at such a fast pace & not feeling like it was “brain damage”. Scotty O’Ferrall, while smarting over an abrupt end with his band Smoke Star, got a call from a mutual friend, telling him Joey was looking for a drummer for his new project & was the first person who came to mind. They cracked open beers & just plowed ahead writing material all the while searching for the missing pieces. Next came John Heintz, guitar player for the band Tru Smoke Diezel. Joey played in Tru Smoke a few years & doing some touring with them, John was first choice for lead guitar. John brings intense leads while adding depth to the overall sound of the band. Bassist AJ, as he is widely known, has the chops to play bass for Marc Rizzo (Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy) & locally for Connected. AJ's diverse playing abilities allows him to easily meld into different styles which made him a go-to guy for studio session work. Scotty & AJ work well together as they've collaborated on other projects & they hold down the bottom end like seasoned pros. The last piece of the puzzle was quite frustrating for the band since many of the guys in the band had talented singers in their previous bands, so the expectations for the future front man was really high. Auditioning guys for this position sucks no matter who you are & the Piston Driven was no exception. Some were good, some were not. AJ mentioned to the band about auditioning his old singer from Connected, Fern. Fern had also previously played in the Step Kings which was on Roadrunner Records & had toured extensively before dissolving soon after. Fern brings a unique ability to write great lyrics along some very memorable hooks that simply lifts Piston Driven's songs to a new level.
