"If it's cool, creative and different, it's indie"
"And even if indie doesn't literally mean independent, do-it-yourself art any longer, that doesn't mean it will ever fall off the radar. "These days indie is more of a philosophy," Cool said. "If you can maintain control and integrity over your art, whether on your own or with a corporation -- that's what's important."

"THE PROBLEM WITH MUSIC"
by Steve Albini
"Whenever I talk to a band who are about to sign with a major label, I always end up thinking of them in a particular context. I imagine a trench, about four feet wide and five feet deep, maybe sixty yards long, filled with runny, decaying shit.
I imagine these people, some of them good friends, some of them barely acquaintances, at one end of this trench.
I also imagine a faceless industry lackey at the other end holding a fountain pen and a contract waiting to be signed.

~ ONE OF THE NICE GUYS - BIG TIME, OR NOT ~
" ...raised in Austin, Texas, Charlie Sexton
made his debut with
Pictures For Pleasure
in 1985 at age 16.
He followed that up with a self-titled
second album when he was 20.
BECAUSE WORD OF HIS REPUTATION
AS A PRODIGY GUITAR PLAYER
SPREAD FAR AND WIDE, HE FOUND HIMSELF
AN IN-DEMAND SESSION PLAYER
WHILE STILL IN HIS LATE TEENS, WHEN
HE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECORD WITH
Ron Wood , Keith Richards , and Bob Dylan .
Born to a mother who was just 16
when she gave birth to Charlie ,
he and his mother moved to Austin
when he was just four.
His mother would get him out to clubs
[GOD BLESS THAT WOMAN]
like the Armadillo World Headquarters and the
Soap Creek Saloon. Places like the Split Rail and
Antone's Blues Club became his classrooms.
After living outside of Austin for a while with his mother,
he moved back to Austin when he was 12, and the musicians
around Austin, his heroes, people like
Jimmie Vaughan and Stevie Ray Vaughan , Joe Ely , and others,
took him in and put him up until he could earn
more of a living on his own.
From 1992 to 1994, he was a member of
Austin's Arc Angels along with
Doyle Bramhall II , Tommy Shannon , and Chris "Whipper'' Layton .
That group recorded one self-titled album,
released in 1992 on Geffen Records.
By the time the Arc Angels decided to disband,
Sexton was 24 years old and already pegged
as a blues musician. But in fact,
Sexton plays gutsy, fluid blues guitar, but also
spirited rock 'n' roll guitar.
In 1994 and 1995, he formed and recorded
with his new group, the Charlie Sexton Sextet ,
and his debut for MCA Records,
UNDER THE WISHING TREE, was released in 1995.
Sexton's album was well-received by the critics.
UNDER THE WISHING TREE presents Sexton
in an array of musical genres,
touching on Celtic flavored rock, folk-rock and blues.
There is a lot of interplay between guitars,
violins, cellos, dobros and mandolins on the recording,
and Sexton's vocals ride high on top of the melodies.
On his 1995 tour to support the album, he was accompanied
by Susan Boelz - violin, Michael Ramos - organ,
George Reiff - bass and Rafael Gayol - drums.
As a songwriter, Sexton writes about what he knows,
so Texas themes permeate his songs.
His lyrics mix autobiographical experiences
with images that are open to interpretation.
He considers BOB DYLAN his strongest songwriting influences,
while he counts Austin legends JIMMIE VAUGHAN and
STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN among his prime
influences for guitar playing.
More great things are in the offering for this
guitarist, singer and songwriter as he
recently signed a recording contract with
Back Porch Records ."

[NOTE FROM CAT: I have listened to Cruel And Gentle Things over and over, again and again. If you're going to get it, buy two; one for a friend, 'cuz they're going to want to 'borrow' it.]
SOUTHSIDE SESSIONS was born on the road.
In the autumn of 2005, the duo got on a bus with a small band for the Charlie Sexton & Shannon McNally Rock & Roll Revue. Hitting more than a dozen spots around the country, Charlie and Shannon each performed songs from their recent records on Back Porch Records (CRUEL & GENTLE THINGS and GERONIMO, respectively) but always made sure to sit down together for a few songs. The sound - stripped-down, raw, and immediate - was begging to be captured for more than those lucky ones seated in the audience.
The idea was a tantalizing one. The pair had collaborated on each other's past albums: Charlie lended his producing talents and played on GERONIMO, while Shannon harmonized with Charlie on his CRUEL & GENTLE THINGS. Still, they had yet to sit down together for a truly joint project. The results and the response from the Rock & Roll Revue told them that the time was now.

A GENUINE ARTIST
In todays musical climate, there's nothing quite like a genuine artist. And youd be hard pressed to find an artist quite as genuine as Kristin Hoffmann.
While recording her Interscope Records debut REAL in a remote studio in the middle of the woods, Kristin and her musicians had to get creative during their downtime. They would all choose an inspirational card every day. The authenticity card kept emerging, and no matter how many times the deck was shuffled, "I picked that card," recalls Kristin with a laugh. "So when I chose to name the album REAL it just seemed right."
At just 26, shes an old soul with a knack for musical storytelling.
Over classically-inspired piano and guitar parts, Kristin weaves her folky vocals through tales of life's many journeys on her Interscope Records debut album REAL. She worked with famed producer DAVID BOTTRILL (Tool, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) and the result is an album about real human emotions and ultimately finding light, peace and balance in your life.
Having recently completed a tour with the JAKOB DYLAN and the WALLFLOWERS, Hoffman kicked off her own 2006 tour,
after appearing at Sundance in January, and touring with Tina Dico.

Cat’s take on NOVARAE
NIKKI and RANDI . That’s who we now know as NOVARAE ; an acronym of their names.
They describe themselves as "a breath of fresh air." I give them more wind than that… more like a twister stirring up the New York acoustic scene.
Now 23, NIKKI (guitar and vocals) and RANDI (vocals), not only perform the music, but create and write all the music as well.
"It has not been a short venture for NOVARAE, they have been writing songs together for almost 10 years."

A good attention grabber, But, they had me as soon as I listened while browsing.

EILEN JEWELL

If it were based on talent alone, Bostons Americana gem the Eilen Jewell Band would be huge.
--Daniel Gewertz, Boston Herald

Now there's something you don't see every day: someone that good, that young, who plays like she's sixty five years old. Like she doesn't care who's going to listen, doesn't need to care, because she is listening. And listening to something far away, and bringing it right here. Damn!
-- Peter Mulvey

Eilen Jewell - say it "EE-lun" - is the most exciting neo-trad songwriter to emerge from the Boston scene since -- Jake Armerding . Though only 25, the Idaho native sounds like she's been writing songs for at least a couple of centuries. But on her starkly lovely new CD, "Boundary County," she never wears her traditional trappings like an affect. The slow organic sway of her melodies, and the sensual way she rubs against the low end of her register, will remind some of Gillian Welch. Also like Welch, her writing is both intimate and vivid, classically framed and closely observed.
--Scott Alarik, Boston Globe

In addition to Maria's success as the former lead singer of the group '3rd Party' on A&M Records (that charted two Top 40 hits), her songs have been recorded by artists including Celine Dion, N'SYNC, and Jennifer Lopez for whom she penned the Top 10 single 'Waiting For Tonight'.

News: Review of CARWRECK CONVERSATIONS
(Egineered by David Vaught)
By Chris Rietz
For the Lansing State JournalReview Lansing

"Ralston Bowles' midlife 'debut' is a showcase of lean tunes"

Ralston's first album, CARWRECK CONVERSATIONS, released well into midlife has passion, high seriousness, even urgency, but of an entirely different flavor - as it might well be after, say, a few decades of experience.

A career radio man, Ralston has been an ubiquitous behind-the-scenes guy in Grand Rapids since way back, supporting local artists and helping bring touring acts into town. But Conversations is likely to establish what his many proteges already know: Bowles is a first-rate songwriter, thoughtful and eloquent, whose classy "debut" album is a match for anyone's.

The aching "Fragile" is perhaps Bowles' best-known song; it's already been covered by Caroline Aiken , Peter Mulvey , and Michigan's own Rachael Davis .

More than anything else, "CONVERSATIONS" is a showcase for Bowles' rare ability to pack power and density into an effortlessly lean, aerodynamic line - it's easy to see why so many young songwriters have, for so long, regarded him as a mentor.*

Chris Rietz works at Elderly Instruments in Lansing.
His reviews appear every other week in What's On.
Click HERE to listen to a song from Ralston's yet to be released next record.
Recorded in Austin at Wire Recording .. Gurf Morlix , Marvin Etzioni , Radaslov Lorcivic and Jagoda. Engineered by Stu Sullivan and Assisted by Brad Bell.

**********

"Folk artist Caroline Aiken cried the first time she heard Ralston Bowles' heartrending ballad, Fragile.

It was the kind of song she knew she had to record for her latest offering, ARE WE THERE YET, MAMA?

In it, she sings, 'I AM NOT WHERE I WOULD LIKE TO BE - JUST WHERE I AM RIGHT NOW.'

'It's a powerful song,' she said, because it reminds people that 'they are not alone in their struggle.'
