My godmother, Jacqueline Brockington--she always seemed to put this random amount of self-pride in me that I always wanted to push away. I rarely think of myself as much of anyone and the most profound thing she ever said to me--and I still think about it every day of my life and will remember it until I die--I was a rising junior at USC and I was home for the summer and I dropped by her class to speak and tell her about my year and my upcoming plans. When I was done, she told me how proud she was of me, and said, "We're going to see great things from you over the next couple of years." Over the next two years, I became president of a new living and learning community on campus and earned one of four spots as Carolina Band Drum Major, and student taught at Irmo High School, three accomplishments that I still take a great deal of pride in--I felt like I couldn't have done any of those things had I not heard her say those words to me. And I guess I'm most thankful that I had the opportunity to hear her say that before she left us on January 1, 2007.
