About Me

Clive is a double bassist, bass-guitarist, and composer.Clive plays double bass, EUB and bass-guitar in The Zen Bicycle Band with Paul Cheneour on flutes and other assorted woodwind, Dave Robinson on mallet-cat synth and percussion, and (occasionally) Andy Race on drums/percussion. ZBB specialise in original material influenced by world-music.He is the regular bassist with "A1 Combination" led by Bill Barnacle on cornet/vocals, with Chris Rumsey woodwind and Bob Pluck - guitar, and The Andy Maclean Band which indulges in traditional jazz - with bebop and rock n' roll thrown in for good measure!Clive's Interests: Art, literature (including writing poetry), film/drama, history, cooking, gardening, languages, keeping healthy, historically informed music performance, cricket, rugby. Renaissance, Baroque and early Classical music, World Music, Blues, and Jazz (all types but especially be-bop, modern and fusion), Rock (especially music of Cream, Jack Bruce, Hendrix, Dire Straits and Frank Zappa) and all music for double bass. Favourite films: "Oh Brother where art thou", "Bagdad Cafe", "Round Midnight", "The Life of Brian", "Hero", "Matrix", "Men in Black".Favourite television: History documentaries, cookery programs, The Simpsons, news/current affairs, X Files.Favourite books: Foucault's Pendulum, The Name of the Rose; The Lord of the Rings; George R.R. Martin's books, 18th century satire (Swift, Pope, Johnson etc); Shakespeare plays and sonnets; The God Delusion; The Glass Bead Game; Siddhartha; Catch 22; The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; How Musical is Man?; Music, Society, Education; Music of the Common Tongue; Musicking - (these last three by Chris Small); Fear of Flying; The Wellsprings of Music; the poetry of Langston Hughes and W.H. Auden. Heroes: His wife Kim, and family - Pippa, Sonia, Gabriella, and Alex for putting up with his "irritating ways", and anyone with the courage and stamina to take up the double bass.
