About Me

I just learned that there is a Demeter scent called "Redhead in Bed", and I don't like the way that it smells. Does that make me a self-loathing Ginger Kid?
My profession and my passion come together in some very important ways, but they can also be at odds. When they overlap, I breathe a sigh of relief. When there is dissonance, I hold my breath.
As a result, even when I am moving at the speed of sound I can still feel like I am treading water.
I am never bored by life or the people I love, but I am frequently bored by situations. There are so many things I want to do each day that I often feel overwhelmed.
I cannot imagine what it would be like to NOT be in a state of constant motion and evolution. Stagnation scares me and gives me the urge to move. Of course, I have my routines, but I am no creature of habit.
I am intense, but I laugh louder and smile bigger than most people I know. I have a very strong personality, which both rises from and is the cause of that intensity. I rarely feel indifferent about people, ideas, or situations, and people rarely feel indifferent about me.
I keep a close circle of friends, and I care about each of them deeply. At the same time, I enjoy being alone. I am at my best when I have time to observe, think, process, and draw conclusions on my own. I offer this same space to my friends because for me, reciprocity is one of the most important elements of friendship.
I am so close to my best friend that it scares most people. Sometimes it scares me. But I like it.
I abhor small talk and cocktail party banter, so I am often quiet in large groups. The truth is that I am just waiting to discuss politics, religion, literature, or the environment.
I am sometimes referred to as "disciplined" because of my dedication to causes and ideals, my daily workouts, and my vegan diet. But these things do not require my discipline. They require my love...and love them I most certainly do.
I am passionate, a bit of a dreamer, and oftentimes an overachiever...

My Interests

Myspace somehow managed to delete my section on books, movies, and music, but I will slowly add these again. It can be an exhausting process!!

Music:

I was a musician in what feels like a former life. I play trumpet and violin, piano and some guitar. My two greatest passions are, undoubtedly, music and the environment. I could list each band I like and musician I admire, but it would take days.

Books:

I'm primarily a reader of non-fiction, especially books on politics, the environment, racism, history, and nutrition. I love books; and even more so, I love the smell of old books. I am a HUGE nerd.
Currently reading "Food Politics" by Marion Nestle and "Invisible Monsters" by Chuck Palahniuk
Authors I like:
Al Franken
Kurt Vonnegut
John Steinbeck
Henry Rollins
Rumi
Henry David Thoreau
Wendell Berry
Neil Gaiman

Books I like (not by the above authors):
The Dancing Wu Li Masters
Blinded by the Right
Coercion: Why we Listen to What "They" Say
The Skeptical Environmentalist
the Illuinatus! trilogy
Culture Jam
Fast Food Nation
Wasted by Marya Hornbacher
Autobiography of a Blue-Eyed Devil
Lies my Teacher Told Me
the Preacher series (hey, they're "graphic novels"!)

My Blog

Partie Deux de Blog de Nourriture *Updated 6.30.07*

I've decided to start a second food blog, just because I think the other one is getting a little long. Plus I think it makes more sense to post the most recent food at the top, and I don't really want...

Food Porn *Updated 6/06/07*

I have the mind of a fat kid.  I love to eat.  And I love to cook.  Basically, when my roommate and I aren't eating food, we're either talking about it or thinking about it.  So I'...

This week in climate change...

These stories have been all over the news, at least the outlets that I read/listen to, but in case you haven't heard, there were three major stories involving the environment this week (note that even...

Industrial Complex

I'm not much of a blogger, and especially not about the day to day happenings of my life. Today, however, is different. It's not that today was drastically different than any other day. It's that t...

Homecoming

Those of you who are close to me or have read my profile in recent months know that I became an aunt in June. After a very difficult pregnancy that required 4 weeks of bed rest in the hospital, my sis...
