After reading the bio that was previously written for me, I felt a bit disconnected to the story. It isn’t because it stated anything false, but because it wasn’t put in my words as I would want to share it. I can start off by informing you of my Samoan decent; my birthplace; who my parents and siblings are; where I was raised or who my 5th grade teacher was but right now, I don’t feel that that would be relevant. However, I sit here thinking of the many characteristics and roles that may define me: I am a daughter; a sister; a driven single mother. I am woman. I am a seeker of the truth; a lover of the arts; a charismatic friend; an apprentice; a mentor; an insurance professional by day and an aspiring songstress by night. Despite the many roles I’ve committed myself to, the focus of this bio is to present you with some of my musical insight and a bit of background information about how I’ve become passionate about pursuing my dreams of becoming a great musician: a role I’ve yet to fulfill.
The gift of music has been with my family for many of generations. I have memories that go back to my young days in San Diego listening to my grandfather play his piano. There are memories of my days in San Francisco where my brother and myself listened along side my mother as she played music passed down to her from her father on her piano. Then there are recollections of my father sitting next to the kitchen table as he strummed his guitar that still remain vivid in my mind. So, it was pretty inevitable that this gift would one day be giving to me.
Now, I share this gift with you.
As a child in the later 1980’s and early 1990’s, I remember listening to the radio and emulating artists such as Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton. As the years went by, my young ears became more in tune to a more mature soulful sound. This is partially due to the fact that my parents played cassette tapes and records of music they grew up to all day, everyday. Besides listening to music that reminded them of the islands, the music of Marvin Gaye; The Temptations; Al Green; The Delfonics; The Stylistics and Earth Wind & Fire would fill the house. As the years went on, I began listening to artists from Erykah Badu to Roy Ayers. I started listening to different genres from traditional jazz to classic rock (I’m fascinated with jazzy songstresses like Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn but do admire bands like Bread and The Doobie Brothers) to old school Hawaiian and Samoan music. Having been exposed to such great music has helped me much with my own musical ambitions and hence, my own musical style began to emerge.
I don’t have memories of the first song I sang. I can’t even recall when I first started singing. However, I do know that this gift has been with me from the beginning. Up until recently, I was unsure of how I was to use this gift. Now, that I’ve pretty much figured that part out, being able to share this gift and using music as a means of my self expression has become one of my greatest joys. Although pursuing music as a career may be a tempting way of life, I simply pursue music for the love of it.
By the way, this autobiography is still in the making. Peace and blessings.
