Like this one time in Band Camp!
My name is JB and um basically, I’m a vinyl junkie!
I’ve always been a vinyl junkie…
I was raised by a crate digging, record shopping, family of vinyl junkies. Every weekend I would go to Peaches in downtown Rochester with my mom and her twin sister, and we would go shopping for both new releases and classic gems. I listened to what they did, and they liked everything from Teddy Pendergrass to The Rolling Stones, Anita Baker to RUN- DMC and Earth Wind Fire. They were pretty open to all types of music. I loved watching my mom & aunt dance around and sing to whatever record was on. They seemed so carefree and happy when playing their records.
I got my first record when I was 5 it was the WWF Album. I waited all week to go get that album. I mean as a 5-year-old, wrestling was my world. After school I watched Thunder Cats, He –Man, GI-Joe etc. After those shows went off I was wrestling in the grass with my little cousins trying to put them in the Figure Four, Full Nelson, Boston Crab and every now and then, I got to drop kick one of em’ right on their ass. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that the two most important things in my 5-year-old world merged into one packaged in the form of a 12†LP. The allure and thrill of breaking thru the plastic packaging opening the album cover, and seeing all of my favorite wrestlers was totally tits (Cartmen). Then finally getting home and getting that record on our R.C.A 3 in 1 stereo… was my first taste of “Itâ€.
Chic... chic... chigy… that was Fresh !
I’m not sure how to put that ‘It’ into words, but it’s the feeling that you get when you first discover you are passionate about something. I bought my first turntable and mixer at the age of 14. I had been working at the Levi’s outlet in the Sawgrass mall and saved enough money to buy a used Gemini Scratch Master and a one Lineartech something or another turntable and my mom’s boyfriend gave me an old Panasonic CD player. My good friend DJ Shorty hosted “The Bump Show†on Piper High’s local radio station I called him to come over to hook up my new gear. He must have been in a rush or not paying attention but, he had the cross fader set backwards. Which resulted in my being a Hamster style Dj (basically it like learning how to drive using your left foot for the gas and your right for the brake) Get it??? Kinda??? No not really??? Well just know that most other Dj's thought I was pretty strange. So I practiced in my room as much as possible on scratching and mixing even recording my boy's freestyling over instrumentals that I selected; you know all the things young hip-hoppers do. It was at this point that I realized I could control their emotions how they rhymed and what they rhymed about. It's like I was able to set the mood for the mood they were going to set! ...deep!
A beautiful Mind... for Music
Ooh another "It" but this one has no plastic packaging to unwrap or pictures. This "It" is almost like the feeling you get in church when the pastor is preaching to the congregation but, what he's saying is so relevant to what you’re going thru... it seems like he is talking directly to you. What I have found is a connection between life and music...a new life? Maybe, I'm Pretty Sure There Were Many Of Us Born As A Result Of How Barry White, Marvin Gaye and Al Green made our parents feel. But that's just one feeling I'm talking about all aspects of human emotion... I had to test it I had to see how this could work. So very much like a poet can organize words to express himself I put records together in that same way. I then asked my best friend's older brother to Dj his 17th birthday party and there I was 14 years in a house full of young adults. Speakers… loud! Mic… checked! They said... they liked the music. I would not say I was in control of them but, would say we were connected spiritually it was the perfect give and go like I was MJ and they were Pippen. During that party I realized that until otherwise instructed...
This is what I was born to do!
