Sell By Dave

About Me

Sell By Dave is a DJ, producer and promoter based in Bristol in the West of England. He's a familiar face on the city's club scene. He initially made his name as promoter/resident DJ at his own monthly party, best before:, which continues to take place 5 years after first launching. The success of best before: can be put down to the night's distinctive, anything goes approach and passion for playing great music - be it obscure or well-known. best before: is also one of the only Bristol nights to consistently play disco records, alongside everything from classic acid house and bleep techno to cosmic rock, UK garage, dubstep, hip-hop, electrofunk and pointless pop.
On the back of best before: and short-lived spin-off night Tricky Disco, Sell By Dave has played extensively in his hometown and throughout the UK. His eclectic, dancefloor-friendly style has proved popular with both punters and promoters alike. Sell By prides himself on tailoring his sets to the occasion - as all good DJs should do - and is just as happy warming up for house or techno DJs as he is mashing up disco at music festivals. This approach has seen him play major festivals (The Big Chill, Bestival, Bloom) as well as such high profile venues as SEOne, AKA, The Big Chill House and the Vibe Bar (London), Rainbow Warehouse (Birmingham) and Motion, Thekla, Timbuk2 and Dojo (Bristol). This autumn Sell By Dave also made his first DJ jaunt outside the UK, playing at Civic in Sydney, Australia. In the past, he has also played at Red Bull private parties.
In the studio, Sell By Dave is one half of Thumbs Aloft (alongside friend Five-Stylez), Bristol chancers famous for their Pointless Edits label, holding a record-breaking game of musical statues at Bloom Festival, and the anthemic 'Stick Around', which was played by Annie Mac on Radio One and became an underground disco anthem in the summer of 2007. The first Thumbs Aloft mix CD, 'The Sound Of Bedminster', will be completed in December 2008. Sell By also plays with the Kelly Twins as The Piece Djs.

Sell By Dave is the DJ alter ego of Matt Anniss, freelance dance music journalist and former Editor of IDJ Magazine.
