Miss Jamaica US 2007

About Me

Chaka Laguerre was born in New York City on September 16, 1986. In just a short time, the effervescent beauty has already earned several coveted titles. She is the former Miss Jamaica US 2007, an alum of the prestigious Amherst College, and an alum of the esteemed Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for Art, Music, and Performing Arts. Chaka, a trained dance of fifteen years, is no stranger to the stage. Since the age of seven, she has been training in Ballet, Modern, African, Jazz, Tap, and Hip- Hop, and dancing on stages with the top performers and dance companies in the world. She has built an impressive dance resume, including performances with Katherine Dunham, Michael Jackson, Alvin Ailey Dance Company, Brooklyn Academy of Music,Dance Africa, to name a few. Always determined to maintain a certain degree of academic achievement, as a child she balanced her academics with her dance training and activities. Growing up, she was valedictorian of her primary school, won several city-wide writing competitions, graduated as an honors student from a specialized middle school for law and journalism. In 2004, Chaka was accepted into LaGuardia High School, which paved the way for her continued studies in dance, Ballet and Pointe Technique and Martha Graham Technique. She graduated with an honors diploma in dance and academics, and matriculated into Amherst College, the top college in the United States. In college, Chaka quickly made a name for herself as the “hardest working woman on campus,” studying various academic disciplines, being involved in various charities, and participating in all performing arts activities on campus. In June 2007, she entered the Miss Jamaica US pageant. After competing against several hopeful young ladies in the competition, in which the contestants were judged in the categories of swimwear, evening gown, and an interview segment, taking the talent award, and delivering a moving speech about her experience as a Jamaican-American in America, Chaka triumphed and was crowned Miss Jamaica US 2007. Immediately after being crowned, besides aspiring to be an outstanding representative for Jamaica, Chaka’s priority was completing her senior year at Amherst College, where her triumph as Miss Jamaica US was acknowledged and celebrated upon her return, particularly in the special edition of the Alumni magazine for the graduating class of 2008. After graduating Cum Laude in May 2007, the proud alum rushed home to New York City where she has continued her reign as Miss Jamaica US. In July 2008, before relinquishing her crown, she went to Jamaica to compete in Miss Jamaica World. Throughout the competition, Chaka proved herself as an outstanding competitor, becoming a top finalist in the “Miss Jamaica World Sports and Fitness Competition” and the “Miss Jamaica World Talent Competition.” After giving a riveting dance performance on the night of the Miss Jamaica World Grand Coronation and impressing the audience with her response to the Final Question, Chaka placed fourth in the Miss Jamaica World pageant. Her successful performance in the pageant gave her exposure and she garnered support from the Jamaican public on the night of the pageant and thereafter. She recently returned to the United States, where she plans to attend law school in September 2009. Her dream has always been to become an attorney, focusing on international law and foreign policy. However, she has been encouraged to pursuit a career in Fashion, Media, and Entertainment. Throughout her college career, she studied Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought, Political Science, Black Studies, Sociology, French, and English. She has worked for Atlantic Records, Def Jam Records, and Black Entertainment Television, in the production department, marketing department, artist and repertoire department, creative department, and legal department. She has also modeled for several fashion designers in New York City. With her sparkling personality, beauty, intelligence, strong character, and a royal name like Chaka, there is no telling what she will accomplish.[LOVEMYFLASH][/LOVEMYFLASH]
