Free Festival is the collaborative output of Brian Ellis and Brian Grainger. Both Ellis and Grainger met in 2004 via the internet, and immediately found common ground in their prolific styles and musical interests. Following a slew of solo works by both of the boys under many different monikers, they decided in Summer of 2005 to finally try to produce something together. Ellis was living in Washington at the time, while Grainger was located in South Carolina. Files were transferred, and long conversations and late nights gave way to the foundation of what they wanted to do. Drawing collective influences from psychedelic rock, folk, hippie culture and electronic music, the duo quickly progressed into a pleasant balance of the different sounds and approaches they each brought to the table.
Their debut album was released at Benbecula Records in 2006 as a part of their ongoing Minerals Series. Limited to less than 200 copies, it is currently out of print.
They have since released an exclusive track (Seashell) on the Attacknine Records compilation Presence Under The Tree, and they are currently hard at work on new material for their second full-length album, to be released at Attacknine Records in 2007.
