About Me

David Gwynn was born David Lance Guynes in San Francisco, California on December 4, 1952 into a family with a deep musical tradition. His father worked as a bricklayer and wrote country songs, and lived next to another bricklayer and aspiring songwriter named Harlan Howard. House guests would sometimes include the likes of Willie Nelson, members of the Carter Family, Roger Miller and many more.
Davids grandmother would critically listen to his playing as she sang old Bessie Smith and Billy Holiday tunes. The sound of country, blues, jazz, and rock and roll was a constant companion during his youth and the guitar gradually substituted baseball as his first love. At ten years of age he was playing all styles of guitar instrumentals with his first band.
Then came the strong influence of the Beatles and the “British invasion” of the sixties, and at 13 years of age David was watching Jimi Hendrix. Throughout his school years he going out to see the Butterfield Blues Band and unique west coast groups such as Spirit, as well as the great guitarists such as Roy Buchanan and Jeff Beck at every possible opportunity. He then became interested in Indian classical music, studied its concept and structure, and listened to the renown masters of the sitar, sarod, and sarangi in numerous concerts around the San Francisco bay area.
David worked professionally throughout California as a guitarist playing many styles throughout the 70s, including with some real legends of country music history. During this period he began consciously working his roots and influences into one style. Then in 1984, as fate would have it, David arrived in Madrid, Spain on a small tour and met his wife, Rosa, on the very first day there. Since then he has worked as a producer, composer, teacher and studio musician – recording and touring with many well known Spanish artists and groups.
He has recorded two self produced solo albums : “David Gwynn” 1996 and “Last of the Buffalo” 2001. His music is a mixture of ancestral tradition, a deep blues feeling and cultivated psychedelic soul. David has recently formed a new group who played for the first time in the Blues-Rock Festival in Torreperogil, Spain in August of 2007. His new group includes Kiko Perez on bass and vocals, and keyboardist David Lads who recorded on Gwynn first album, and who is now promoting his first solo album “Seeders.”
Current projects also include acoustic guitars on a new record with Vilma y los Señores, guitars and co-production on a record for “Olivia de Happyland”, guitarist in an anthology “50 years of Spanish Pop” and concerts with Florida guitarist Dan Carlin.
