In the beginning there was one man. Jaani Peuhu, already a seasoned rock music professional at a pretty young age, wanted to do exactly what he wanted, without having to please anybody else except for himself. So he wrote a number of songs that sounded more like the music he was hearing in his head than the sound of any of his prior bands.
These songs became Nude, the first Iconcrash album, that was released in spring 2005. Jaani had written, produced and performed much of the record himself. Although there were also several guest musicians involved, it was basically Jaani's solo album.
To be able to perform his songs on stage, Jaani put together a live band consisting of his musician friends. This band played dozens of gigs to support the album, and during those gigs these talented musicians made their own interpretations of the songs on the album.
Nowadays Iconcrash is a real band consisting of five people. Besides Jaani, these people are Anu Tukeva on boards, Jesse Valo on bass, Matti Toivonen on guitar and Oskari Vilmunen on drums.
Doing it all by myself certainly had its appeal and its benefits, I wont deny that. However, I felt like it was time to explore the benefits of having a real band, and with the current line-up, there are plenty, Jaani says. Now everybody's ideas and input are welcome, and I honestly believe this makes our music better.
To me, Iconcrash never felt like my solo project entirely, even if Nude was pretty much a solo effort, Jaani says. When we have been on the road, and even in our rehearsal place, it has always felt like a real band. But as far as studio work goes, there has been a major change, as it's no longer just me doing everything.
Iconcrash are currently working on their second album, the making of which is being chronicled on the blog Iconcrash: Enochian Devices. The album is being recorded at Dynasty Recordings in Finland with the assistance of Antti Eräkangas.
Jaani says the influences for the album are such luminaries as Killing Joke (eighties stuff), Depeche Mode (Songs of Faith And Devotion), Sneaker Pimps, Trent Reznor, Billy Corgan, Björk and King Diamond.
If that doesnt sound like a recipe for an interesting record, we dont know what does.
