METROWEST SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

About Me

Mission Statement—

The Metrowest Symphony Orchestra’s mission is to provide high quality programs of established symphonic repertoire, enriched by contemporary works and other artistic disciplines for the enjoyment and education of both its members and the Metrowest community.

This talented blend of professional and volunteer musicians is dedicated to entertaining, educating and encouraging the audiences of today and tomorrow.

History—

The orchestra that was to become the Metrowest Symphony (MSO) began in Framingham in 1973. The group then rehearsed in and presented concerts in the auditorium of the Framingham Civic League. In 1980, the musicians were invited to Marlborough by then Mayor Joseph Ferrecchia and the Office of Cultural Affairs. The following year the orchestra was incorporated and for 22 years the group was known as the Greater Marlborough Symphony Orchestra (GMSO.)

In 2002, the organization changed its name to the Metrowest Symphony Orchestra to better reflect the population it serves. The orchestra’s musicians are members of the Metrowest communities from all walks of life, who play for the sake of the communities, their love of the arts, and the enrichment of the Metrowest communities.

In 2007, the orchestra moved again, this time to become a Symphony in Residence at Hopkinton High School, through an agreement with the Hopkinton School Committee and the Hopkinton Chamber of Commerce.

The MSO holds open rehearsals on Tuesday evenings, 7:30 PM, at Hopkinton High School. We welcome anyone interested in performing with us to call 508-686-3100, or email [email protected]. You can also check our website for rehearsal and contact information www.metrowestsymphony.org.

"The MSO is a mid-size symphony of 60-70 musicians with a 30-40 member permanent core. The MSO offers programs for audiences of all ages that inspire and inform. Its enormous breadth of repertoire and scope of musical styles range from early Baroque works to world premieres, commissions by local and guest composers, and concerts that incorporate jazz, big-band and folk music.

“Music allows the listener to transcend, even for a brief time, the stresses of everyday life. Exposure to the arts for adults and children builds a strong foundation for all forms of learning, including the nurturing for a life-long appreciation of the visual and performing arts. The MSO presents specially programmed music that educates, amuses and surprises seasoned listeners and newcomers alike, helping build future audiences for classical music.

The MSO shares the vitality of classical music and builds future audiences by presenting, classic, unusual, and dynamic concerts. It makes music more accessible and fun through interactive explorations, providing music in context, and thematic programming that educates and inspires. The MSO’s unique concerts create a participatory experience of classical music for both adults and children"
