Misunderstood Rescue is a 501(c)(3) statewide pit bull rescue. The organization was started in January 2005 after founder, Sara Meehan, visited a Washington D.C. shelter and found a three month old pit bull puppy that was not available for adoption because of its breed. Many shelters put down pit bulls and do not consider them for adoption for fear they will end up in the wrong hands.
Misunderstood was created to rescue, adopt, and educate. The organization strives to place dogs that are true ambassadors for the breed. It also educates staff, volunteers, and potential adopters, about the virtues and challenges of the breed so that each dog can be properly socialized and trained. Misunderstood Rescue believes that if they place even one true ambassador in a responsible home, the dog itself will be the breed’s best ambassador. It will be a step in returning these dogs to our circle of compassion and meeting the organization’s mission of protecting animals against cruelty.
