Some bands are defined by genre, some bands are defined by the association of a cult following within their grasps. The band “Characters.†defines itself only as songwriting, written to the best of their abilities, with as much heart and substance that they could whole heartily offer to an audience.
The band merges two styles of music-rhythm & blues, and soul into one genre first established during the late 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s by bands like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix known as rock and roll.
The band’s first EP simply titled “We are Characters.†produced by Sean Killary (Attack the City) took a deep stab into progressive rock and roll without the fear of finding mainstream airplay. The band's original line up featured drummer Patrick Kilbourn, guitarist Chris Morin and keyboardist/songwriter Ryan Lord as well as remaining members Jeremiah J. Louf on vocals and Brad Vautour on bass guitar.
Minding their core musical influences, the EP experimented with unconventional song structures, and atypical instrumentation using everything from a theremin, to a long cardboard tube with a microphone duct taped to the receiving end for a more “psychedelic†vocal peak. Songs like “humming projector†and “Buzz from the red†paved their way into the local music scene as a psychedelic rock and roll band.
To approach their music in a more deliberate fashion, singer/songwriter Jeremiah J. Louf and Brad Vautour (now guitarist) decided to strip down the instrumentation and production of the band to create a more raw, potent, soulful sound which pays homage to the early inventors of the rock and roll world.
In doing this, the band gained bassist Kevin Quinn and percussionist David DePari which has enabled the band known as Characters. to move further into a musical direction that "haunts them", further into a crossroad where they can “set up and play rock and roll music loud enough for ‘God’ and the ‘Devil’ to sing along with,..if the two are up for singing with a bunch Characters."
