StormLight's first incarnation, Azurewind, was formed in 2007 by four friends in Alexandria, Minnesota. Guitarist and main composer Jake Uggerud found the core of the band with his brother Jared and childhood friends Dustin Johnson and Adam Schlosser. Influenced by the melodic, and bombastic European metal scene, Jake went to work composing in the winter of 2006 and spring of 2007. Present in the music were many elements of neo-classical, symphonic, progressive and power metal which were made into a cohesive whole. Once the material was ready, the band enlisted the help of John Gladen, a high school friend of Jake's, to fill the vocal slot. Azurewind would only play a couple local shows and record two self produced tracks before StormLight was born.
In early 2008, StormLight was made as John had parted with the band due to personal reasons. As an incomplete lineup, the group had begun to look for a replacement singer. Unable to find the talent desired for the job, Jake decided to front the band leaving the guitar slot vacant. Guitarist Matt Hodsdon, a 17 year old shredder from the Twin Cities, had accepted to fill the role to once again solidify the line-up. A new chapter unfolds for the band as composing and recording resumes.
Today the band is in the middle of recording their debut demo The Horizon Calls, which will be self-produced. Their clear goal is to prove to Minnesota, the US and eventually the World that their style is still a force in North America.
