In terms of classical music, polyphony is a system of musical writing that was especially developed during the periods of Renaissance and Baroque, to reach these days as an artistic musical expression. The artistic European polyphony is based on the contradistinction of equivalent melodic lines. The distinction between this kind and Folk Polyphony is that the second one has former roots, according to some researchers primitive ones; it is found in very few areas all over the world and is based on the variation of the melodic expression lines of the members of the polyphonic group. There are three fundamental features that plead for the old origin of Folk Polyphony, the collective and vocal rendition and the five-tone scales without semitones that represent its musical base.Musical base of the polyphonic song, the several forms of the five-tone scale without semitones, namely gamut of five sounds in intervals of great second and small third that may reach up to five combinations of the sounds without semitones.Folk polyphony is rarely found. Through different ways of evolution and influences, it is found in Epirus, South Albania, South Italy, Corsica, Bosnia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Rumania, Slovakia, South Poland, Ethiopia, Georgia, North Pakistan, north foothills of Himalayas, Indonesia and Taiwan. The expansion of Folk Polyphony preserves the reverberation of the cultural interactions between past eras, elevating the osmosis, the relations and the bridges of communication among the cultures of neighbouring nations in regions that nowadays borders seem insuperable. These days, the substance of Polyphonic Song acquires a special worth. The collective character of its rendition, based on specific, historically, social structures and collective thinking, is acclaimed as the primary element of promotion and survival of the kind at the present time of individuation and rapture. The collectiveness constitutes the main interest motive for a lot of young people that turn to the Polyphonic Song seeking for authentic soul hearings and collective artistic expression, giving new wind to a kind which, in the vortex of the new cultural models and changes, seemed to march strictly towards its sunset and its future ruin.
