About Me

Longtime musician Gary White is currently performing solo acoustic and as guitarist/vocalist with the band the Snowbirds. Gary began his career playing in bar bands in his hometown of Green Bay, WI. Shortly after high school Gary moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where he joined Hope Nichols and Aaron Pitkin in the band Fetchin Bones. The trio recorded a 4-track demo that caught the attention of DB Recs' Danny Beard who signed the band in 1985. After the line-up was expanded to include Marc Mueller and Gina Stewart (later replaced by Danna Pentes) the band began recording "Cabin Flounder" with legendary producer Don Dixon (REM, The Smithereens). While Hope was the primary vocalist, Gary sang lead on three standout tracks as well as playing lead and rhythm guitar. The band began to tour extensively and among many trips to Athens GA a friendship with the members of REM was formed. Michael Stipe of REM listed Fetchin Bones as one of his "Ten Favorite Bands" in Rolling Stone magazine in '86. After the success of Cabin Flounder Fetchin Bones looked to record a follow-up record, again working with Don Dixon. Capitol Records became interested and the band subsequently signed to the home of the Beatles. With a new record "Bad Pumpkin" released the band once again hit the road touring the US coast-to-coast. A highlight was opening eight dates for REM's Lifes Rich Pageant tour. Other memorable shows included opening for The Dream Syndicate, Green on Red, Steve Earle, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Camper Van Beethoven, The Meat Puppets and three shows with The Replacements. While with Fetchin Bones Gary got to play some of the most iconic venues in music: CBGBs, The Apollo Theater in Harlem, The Grand Ole Opry and Gerde's Folk City. The band also made several television appearences including MTV's Cutting Edge, the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test and the CMJ Awards show broadcast on the USA Network. Following that year of touring Gary and drummer Marc Mueller wanting a change in direction decided to start a new band, the Skeeters, with Marco Heeter handling the bass chores. Once again with the new band Gary found himself on DB Recs with the release of "Wine, Women and Walleye. More touring followed and for a time the band relocated to upstate New York. Wishing to return to his hometown to start a family, Gary moved back to Green Bay and the band was dissolved. Sticking close to home while his children were young, Gary played locally in a variety of bands and continued to write and play his solo material. 2005 saw the formation of the Snowbirds with Gary , Timm Buechler, Jason and Jeff Berken joining forces. Due to a lack of time Jason and eventually Jeff left the band but new member Jon Mark Bolthouse was brought on board. With plans to record in the future the Snowbirds are on hold until a new drummer is found. The Snowbirds can be heard at: www.myspace.com/thesnowbirds Gary has meanwhile been plying his trade as a solo performer, frequently playing the Hinterland Lounge in Green Bay as well as opening for Pat MacDonald and Willy Porter. With over thirty new unreleased songs Gary is anxious to record and to perform the new songs live.
