Famn ronounced famine) was the brain child of Morgan “M.O.†Little. Realizing the undeniable absence of “real†hip hop that has lingered since the commercial exploitation of the culture, M.O. decided to join forces with those who are trying to keep the spirit alive, not by shunning what now passes as hip hop on the radio but by embracing it and creating a hybrid that can be enjoyed by purists and the MTV generation alike. They say that to make it, it takes a combination of 10% talent and 90% hustle. Having the talent part covered M.O. has spent the last few years perfecting his hustle. Apparently it’s been working. Since its inception FAMN has gone from 10th position in the Montreal Mirror’s Readers Poll in 2003 to 1st in the 2007 edition while another project the busy MC was heavily involved in, The Farm Team, took the number 1 spot last year. Line that up beside regular air play on both CKUT 90.3 and K103 in Montreal, a track placed on 2 nationwide compilation distributed through DropHit Music, and Ghettogroove Records ,their own clothing line, FAMN Fatigues, hundreds of live performances around Canada and the release of their 4th cd, Things Done Changed, and it goes to show that these guys have an appetite for success. During a short stint in Ottawa, the struggling MC plotted and schemed his escape from the lifeless capital of his humble country. He cast off for the Island city of Montreal in 2001, with fellow rhymesayer, B Littlez, to found what has now become know as the FAMN movement. M.O. worked tiresly, enrolling in an Audio Engineering program at The Trebas Institute by day, and perfecting his craft by night. The Duo laid the foundation for the group by coining the gritty sound that has come to be expected of FAMN, releasing the infamous FAMN mixtape Volume 1.5 and performing at an endless amount of showcases and festivals in Quebec and Ontario, spreading the hunger and building up a substantial fan base. In 2003, for personal reasons, B Littlez left FAMN and M.O. was forced to carry on the torch for all those who had been following the group’s progression. M.O. hit the studio hard and released the second volume of the mixtape series with some unreleased material from B Littlez and some fresh songs M.O. cooked up alone. The result: the streets went crazy. M.O. continued to do as many shows as possible and started working with other artist to expand his audience. This lead to the meeting of FAMN’s now second in charge, Tek Luciano, through a mutal friend. At 15, Tek was young and inexperienced but M.O. saw the raw talent that lay beneath. He patiently worked with the hungry youngster, schooling him on both the music and the politics that is the hip hop game. The young protégé was receptive and learned quickly, compiling a considerable catalogue over the following few years. Eager to feed the hungry streets who were awaiting more from the dynamic group, especially since the addition of both Tek Luciano and Nastyness, another young talent who joined for a short period, M.O. released FAMN Mixtape Volume 3. A compilation aimed at tiding fans over until the main course was ready, Volume 3 was Nasty’s first and last project with FAMN. Unfazed, M.O. is never one to be dismayed by obstacles, he and Tek got on their grind and made up for the absence by incorporating another eager rapper, Midnight, as well as super producer, Whyer, to lay the soundtrack for the future of FAMN. With the recent release of their appropriately titled, debut album Things Done Changed, FAMN is preparing to take the world by storm. It looks to be a busy summer with a tour in the works with fellow Montreal heavyweights, FBI Jedeyez and newcomers Psynlangwage. Over the last few years FAMN has made many contacts and many fans and plan to make a big push with this latest effort so keep your eyes and ears peeled and save some room because FAMN is here to fill the hungry void we’ve all been feeling.
