Pianist, Composer, Educator

About Me

I was born in Mexico City on the 18 of May 1964.
I started playing the piano when I was 5 years old; throughout my childhood I was exposed to the music and folklore of Mexico and Latin America.
I learnt to play string instruments such as the Venezuelan “Cuatro”, the Jaranas and the Vihuela, but the instrument I played the most was the harp from Veracruz, a beautiful instrument that traveled with me playing Mexican music to Cuba (1979) and Europe (1980).
I studied classical piano in the National School of Music and the Centre of Studies and Musical Research (CIEM) as well as private tuition with Marta Garcia Renart and Leopoldo Gonzalez.
In 1984 I went to Lyon, France to study musical education and Piano with Jack Chapuis.
In 1985 I went back to Mexico and started playing afro Latin music with merengue, salsa and traditional son bands, joined the jazz program of the Superior School of Music and searched for information on improvisation techniques and modern harmony with teachers such as: Ulises Goni, Margarita Vega, Cesar de la Cerda, Cristobal Lopez and Enrique Nery.
At this time I was also writing music for dance and theatre companies and teaching music in Martell School of Music and the Superior School of Composition and Musical Arrangements (piano, harmony, workshops in Latin music, music theory, etc).
In 1991 I founded Ireson, a Latin band that played the songs of Mexican composers such as David Haro, Rafa Mendoza and Agustin Lara among many others.
We played in clubs and festivals and traveled through Mexico until 1999 when on a visit to Singapore to perform in a Latin club, I decided to relocate my activities to Singapore.
In Singapore I have had the opportunity to play with some great jazz musicians. I performed in a duo with the great US bassist Christy Smith for almost 2 years at the Oriental hotel, have accompanied many great jazz singers, and continue writing for, and playing Latin music with an always new Ireson band.
I have studied and now teach jazz piano with the help of friends like pianists Mario Serio and Mei Sheum.
I am now enjoying playing Mondays to Saturdays with my good friend Maya Nova - a great jazz singer from Bulgaria - at the Singapore Ritz Carlton; solo piano at St. Regis, and am also currently teaching at the Australian International School.
