About Me

Piotr Wyleżoł - pianist, composer, and improviser, enjoyed by a wide range of listeners – musicians as well as music fans, young and old. Born on December 6th, 1976, he was already playing in public and winning prizes at competitions as a child, performing a classical repertoire. At the age of 10, he appeared with the Rybnik Philharmonic Orchestra, playing piano concertos by Mozart and Beethoven. He completed his primary education at the Karol and Antoni Szafranek Public Music School in Rybnik, studying piano under Romana Fritz. In 1995, he graduated from the piano class of Irena Kryszczukajtis at the Karol Szymanowski Public Musical Lyceum in Katowice, after which he went on to study under Wojciech Niedziela at the Jazz Institute of the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in that same city, receiving his Master's degree in 2000. In October 2007, he joined the faculty of the recently established College of Jazz and Contemporary Music at the Academy of Music in Krakow, as a piano instructor. For years now, Piotr Wyleżoł has been recognised as one of Poland's premier jazz pianists. His career on the jazz stage began while still in college, performing with groups led by Janusz Muniak, Jarosław Śmietana, Marek Bałata and other major Polish jazz musicians. As a student, he was also awarded numerous prizes and distinctions at various competitions and festivals - including the Jazz Juniors Competition in Krakow, where he took first prize in 1998, the Pomeranian Jazz Autumn “Key to a Career” competition, the “Jazz on the Oder” festival in Wrocław (individual award for best instrumentalist), the International Competition for Jazz Improvisation in Katowice, and many others. To date, in the course of his professional career on the jazz stage, he has worked with a wide variety of renowned artists: Janusz Muniak, Tomasz Szukalski, Jarosław Śmietana, Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski, Grzegorz Nagórski, Andrzej Cudzich, Adam Pierończyk, Gary Bartz, John Purcell, Urszula Dudziak, Ewa Bem, Piotr Baron, Antymos Apostolis, Nigel Kennedy, Steve Logan, Monty Watters, Janis Siegel and others. In recent years he has been a steady member of groups led by Nigel Kennedy, Jarosław Śmietana, and Ewa Bem. In addition to his work as a sideman, Piotr Wyleżoł has led his own trio since the beginning of his artistic career. .. His latest CD, “Piano Trio” - with Łukasz Żyta on drums and Michał Barański on bass – was released in 2006. This was his second album as a leader, following the CD “Yearning”, recorded in 2001 with Łukasz Żyta and bassist Adam Kowalewski. That release was greeted with enthusiasm by the jazz press - “... The album is one of this year's most interesting debuts. This trio of young Polish musicians creates a mood that is on a par with the most significant achievements in the genre...” (Jazz Forum, November 2001) Piotr Wyleżoł has performed many concerts at festivals throughout Poland as well as a number of other countries. As of today he has participated in the recording of several dozen CDs by a range of artists, and the number continues to grow.
