About Me
If you ask Billy Angel of The Rockabilly Band and 103.9 The Monster why the Flathead Valley he'd tell you because its all here. Clean air, nice people, summer fun and white winters when asked what made him want to be a musician Billy replied I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show when I was 6 years old and I figured anyone who could make women behave like that had the best job in the world. So when his older brother went to Viet Nam and left his guitar behind, Billy pick it up, and started hanging out, guitar in hand, with some older guys in the neighborhood that had a band. After their rehearsals they would show Billy some chords and hed go home to practice until his fingers bled. He took one traditional music lesson but found the old man boring so he decided to learn the songs that were on the radio rather than on paper and taught himself to play by ear from borrowed albums. Billy plays by memory or by learning on the spot which has made it possible for him to jam with many different artists over the years and earned him the title of the walking juke box, if he doesnt know the song, most often he can learn it while you finish your drink. He played his first gig for money when in the 6th grade, he made $5. Started playing night clubs at 16, was on the road by 19 and has been a professional musician ever since performing in venues of all sizes and styles from Canada to the Florida Keys. When asked to recount a memorable gig, Billy who is originally from Tampa Florida, tells of playing in Sanibel Island when a hurricane came through. Before his band could get off the island the causeway was closed so the owner of the club tossed them the keys and told them to help themselves to the bar and lock up if they leave. They spent the night entertaining the other people stuck on the island and thankfully the hurricane passed by devastating an island to the north.Influenced by the Stones, Brian Setzer, Sting, Rickie Lee Jones and the Beatles, as soon as Billy started writing music he wanted his own Abby Road and has always owned some form of recording medium throughout his career. He and wife Lacie own The Nest Recording and Production Co. and have helped numerous new players on the road to being musicians. Billy says Im living the dream I had as a child and always finds a way to share with others what life has afforded him. In addition to his professional gigs, youll find him Christmas Caroling at retirement homes, donating equipment or performing for fundraisers. It doesnt matter if its opening for Guess Who, jamming with Lester Chambers, or leading a sing-a-long around the neighborhood bonfire, he loves to play and it shows. His charm and pure enjoyment of the music is contagious, if youre in the crowd you cant help but get involved and love it, he is a true entertainer. You can catch him by day as a DJ on 103.9 The Monster (www. monster1039.com), the perfect day job for someone as passionate about classic rock as Billy is. What does he think about being a DJ I love playing music, this is the best gig ever! he says. As for his bands? Theres 3! The Rockabilly band is high energy fast paced fun for all ages inspired by Brian Setzers Stray Cats style this 3 piece show comes with all the trimmings, including costumes, hula hoops and bubble gum blowing contests not to mention the red or purple Gretsch guitars. Fresh Ink is a classic rock cover band that rocks any event with all 3 members having over 20+ years of professional experience audiences always come away pleased. Then there is Billy Angel Live- his solo act that is perfect for that intimate setting or the poolside party with the song list featuring everyone from James Taylor to John Mayer, a little country and even Lacies favorite from long ago Walkin my baby back home. Sometimes after one of his solo performances, Billy has been known to pull out the acoustic guitar and sit around with the audience playing all the favorite bonfire songs just to keep the party going and the people singing.
