If it wasn’t for one members’ brief stint in the county lockup and another members’ musically gifted uncle, the Southern-based Hip Hop duo known as Guttah Boi Status may have never risen up in the streets and clubs of Florida’s exploding rap underground.

Fronted by Demetrius Brown AKA Mr. Murk, and Guervens Regisme AKA K. Gizzle, the pair are currently tearing up the Southern Hip Hop scene with a potent blend combining tales of street-life, club-life, and life and death struggles in rhymes the boys say are “deep, real, lyrical, heartfelt, cutthroat and from the street.”

“In our music, we got cuts for the streets, for the struggle, for the ladies and basically for relating how we live on a day to day basis,” K. Gizzle adds.

Long before they were telling it like it is from the Florida streets and clubs, Murk and Gizzle were just a couple of Hip Hop-lovin’ kids whose paths were about to meet at a crossroads where adversity and mistakes meets opportunity and a musical future. Both Murk and Gizzle grew up with music and singing in church, but neither of the teenagers was particularly drawn to anything in life other than Hip Hop music. Major artists in the genre including Tupac, Naughty By Nature and Juvenile influenced them as they grew up and discovered an identity through the Rap and Hip Hop culture.

For Mr. Murk, the real-life stories and toughness in Hip Hop lyrics helped him get through the hardships of being locked up in jail. But it was through that adversity that he found his musical partner in K. Gizzle.

“My sister told her home boy Ojay that I could rap, and we linked up. He started sending me beats, and I kept my head straight until I touched down.”

Ojay happened to be the uncle to young K. Gizzle, also a talented and up-n-coming rapper in his own right. Ojay introduced the two, and it wasn’t long until they joined forces to become Guttah Boi Status.

“Yeah, it was my uncle Ojay growing up that had all the bangin’ cuts,” Gizzle says of his uncle’s influence on his musical development. “I used to write rhymes at school when I was 12 and 13, and then run home and let my uncle Ojay hear them, and that’s how I got better and better.”

Now uncle Ojay is not only a relative, he’s the manager and a continuing musical collaborator for Guttah Boi Status. Ojay recorded Guttah Boi Status’s debut The Sampler and is working the controls for their follow-up official mix tape that will drop in mid-November.

They’ve come a long way from their junior high days of bangin’ out beats on desks in school and running home to perform for relatives. Together, Mr. Murk and K. Gizzle have grown from rapping solely about violence and drugs to encompass a more adult and intelligent style of rappin’ and rhymin’ – a sound they hope will appeal to as huge an audience as possible.

“Everything we write, we’ve lived in some way, shape, or form,” K. Gizzle says. “Our music and lyrics have different concepts and ideas – meanings that you could listen to in what ever mood that you’re feeling… If you feel like clubbing, you can vibe to our music, and if you feel down you can vibe to our music, and if you feel like getting crunk or spending time with your special companion, you can vibe to our music. That’s what real music is.”
