Now spent, he lay atop her like a beached whale, the smell of whiskey and cigarette smoke mingling with the odor of his unwashed body. She retched. Mustering all her strength she heaved him to the floor, reaching for the lamp as she did. "You little bitch," he growled. "I oughta..." She swung the lamp base with all her strength and he went down. The sound that came from her was more animal than human. Bile rose up within her as she contemplated the possibility that she'd killed him. She reached down and tried to remember how to find a pulse. She pressed two fingers alongside his jawbone. Damn, he's still alive. Should have killed the bastard. If I'm ever going to leave this place, it had better be now.
