George N. Gillett Jr. Biography
"George Gillett attended Amherst College and is a graduate of Dominican College in Racine, Wisconsin.
In 1979 he launched Gillett Communications by buying three small television stations. Three years later he bought the WSM television station in Nashville. In 1984 Gillett acquired Post Corporation's eight television stations, 22 newspapers and associated plant; the non-broadcast assets were sold to Thomson Corporation and other buyers. In 1987 he acquired Storer Broadcasting using Kohlberg Kravis Roberts junk bonds, after the FCC lifted restrictions on ownership.
In 1985 Gillett acquired Vail Associates' Vail and Beaver Creek ski resorts, creating a new era with focus on customer service, Gillett redefined the ski experience and what it meant to be a world class resort. George would often ride chairlifts and greet guests, and launched a massive installation of high-speed detachable chairlifts thereby kick-starting the growth that would put Vail on the map as America's number one ski destination. Gillett also supported major alpine ski events at a time when most ski areas in America declined to host international races, starting with the 1989 World Alpine Ski Championships, and through his support hosted the 1999 World Alpine Ski Championships[2].
Gillett's companies sought Chapter 11 protection in 1992 as higher interest rates penalised junk bond issuers. Gillett's media arm was reorganised as New World Communications under the control of Ronald Perelman.

But, before that, was remaining on the payroll of Vail Resort at $1.5 million a year, Gillett walked away with $32.1 million to restart his business empire when Vail floated on the NYSE the following year[3]. In 1995 he repurchased Packerland undertaken by Booth Creek Management Corp., a company created to oversee the acquisitions and management of interests of the Gillett family from that point forwards, and of which Gillett remains Chairman.
In 1996 he formed Booth Creek Ski Holdings Inc., acquiring or building a range of ski resorts in New Hampshire, California, Washington and Wyoming. He later bought Grand Targhee Ski and Summer Resort, together with several golf courses.
From 1997 he extended his meat interests by building Corporate Brand Foods America (which included ITC, Iowa Ham, Jordan Meats and Wright Bacon), latterly bought by Iowa Beef Processors for US$550 million. Gillett and Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst then bought ConAgra's beef operations - Swift and Company - for US$1.4 billion in 2001[4]. He also controls:
Petaluma Poultry - natural and organic chicken products
Snowball Foods - food processor of turkey and chicken products
Kings Delight - food processor of turkey and chicken products
B3R Country Meats - processes fresh and frozen natural beef
Coleman Natural Products - processes fresh and frozen natural beef and lamb
Gerhards Napa Valley Sausage - a producer of gourmet sausage products made primarily from poultry
[edit] Other interests
Gillett's other business interests include:
Sports - after a failed bid in 2000 with Pat Bowlen and John Elway to buy the NBA Denver Nuggets, NHL Colorado Avalanche and Pepsi Center; on 2 January 2000 Gillett bought an 80% interest in the NHL Les Canadiens de Montréal and their home the Bell Centre (formerly the Molson Centre) for US$185 million[5] Gillett also owns the sports and entertainment promoter the Gillett Entertainment Group
Northland Services Inc. - a marine transportation company
Great Northern Bark and Sierra Organics - landscaping and gardening products company
After months of negotiation with team owner and former NASCAR crew chief Ray Evernham, Gillett bought into the auto-racing team Evernham Motorsports, thereby forming Gillett Evernham Motorsports.
[edit] Vista Auto Group
Gillett's participation in the automotive industry began with Silverthorne Motors in Silverthorne, CO and he recently purchased Glenwood Auto Group in Glenwood Springs, CO. The two have merged to become Vista Auto Group with Subaru, Dodge, Jeep & Chrysler in Silverthorne, Colorado and Subaru, Honda, Nissan & Chevrolet in Glenwood Springs, Colorado
[edit] Liverpool F.C.
Main article: History of Liverpool F.C.
Since October 2006, Gillett had been one of the parties interested in a proposed takeover of England football club Liverpool FC of the English Premiership.[6] In January 2007, Reports stated that Gillett had made another bid for Liverpool. On 31 January 2007, Dubai International Capital announced they had pulled out of the deal, giving Gillett the opportunity to buy the club from David Moores. On 2 February, Gillett and Tom Hicks reached a deal with the clubs' board, which was sealed on 6 February, thought to be worth in the region of £435 million: £220 million to buy out existing shareholders (including approximately £44.8 million of debt), and £215 million for the new stadium proposed at nearby Stanley Park. The Board unanimously recommended that the clubs' shareholders accept this offer.
On 22 January 2008 a majority of Liverpool fans, at the game between Liverpool and Aston Villa, protested against Gillett and Hicks' running of the club, urging the pair to sell their shares in Liverpool FC to DIC. Neither owner, nor their representative Foster Gillett were present at the game. Gillett has reportedly been targeted by DIC to sell his shares. It has been reported that he has fallen out with Tom Hicks and in recent months has kept silent over his dealing with the club. [7] On 7 March 2008, it was reported that Gillett had agreed to sell 98% of his Liverpool stock to DIC.[8]"
Pimp My ProfileRay Evernham Biography
"Ray Evernham (born August 26, 1957 in Hazlet, New Jersey) is currently a NASCAR team owner for Gillett Evernham Motorsports with drivers Kasey Kahne, Patrick Carpentier and Elliott Sadler as well as development driver Kevin Swindell. In 1999, Evernham won the NASCAR Winston Cup Illustrated âSPerson of the Yearâ.
Evernham was a crew chief for NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon from late 1992 to 1999. Gordon and Evernham won 47 Cup races, 3 Cup championships (1995, 1997, and 1998) and were the dominant team in NASCAR Cup competition at the time. Then, Evernham left Hendrick Motorsports and Gordon/Evernham Motorsports in 1999 to form his own team Evernham Motorsports. The team would also be the cornerstone for Dodge's return to NEXTEL Cup racing in 2001.
Revival of Dodge
Founded in 1999, Evernham Motorsports was created to lead Dodge back into prominence in NASCARâ"s elite racing series and field two competitive teams. Today, with the backing of nearly 3,000 Dodge Dealers and the Chrysler Groupâ"s performance brand Dodge, Evernham is fielding cars in the NEXTEL Cup Series, Busch Series, and Craftsman Truck Series, as well as in the ARCA, USAC and Dodge Weekly Racing series. Before the 2001 NEXTEL Cup season, a Dodge had not raced in the series since Phil Good at the Pocono Raceway in June of 1985. Evernham led Dodge's return to NASCAR by fielding two full-time cars in the 2001 season. Bill Elliott was named to drive the No. 9 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge on March 10, 2000. The driver of the No. 19 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge was announced to be Casey Atwood.
In 2002, Jeremy Mayfield was added to Evernham's program, taking over the No. 19 Dodge from Atwood. In 2002, Evernham found success with his new program by witnessing Mayfield win the Winston Open, as well as Bill Elliott winning the Pennsylvania 500. The following race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was also won by Bill Elliott.
In 2006, Jeremy Mayfield was fired for "lack of performance" and for comments deterimental to the team. In August 2006 Elliott Sadler was announced as the new driver of the 19 car.
Controversy
During the 2006 season, former Evernham driver Jeremy Mayfield was fired from the #19 car for 'lack of performance,' as stated by the Evernham team. Court documents reveal that Mayfield blames Evernham's personal life, included a claim that a "close personal relationship" had developed between Evernham and development driver Erin Crocker, and "sub-par" equipment as the reasons he has not won a race in 2006. Evernham recently admitted that he has an ongoing relationship with Crocker. Furthermore, he said about Crocker "The proper thing to do and something her and I would like to do is move her to another race team Evernham is also known for having been penalized with the 2nd largest fine in the history of NASCAR. The fine was for $60,000 and was imposed for using unapproved suspension parts on Jeff Gordon's car in May, 1995. It was originally the largest fine in NASCAR history, until being eclipsed by Michael Waltrip Racing"
