Eija Kankaanranta performs on the kantele as a soloist and chamber musician, focusing on contemporary music and improvisation. Besides Finnish music festivals Eija has appeared for example in Britain, the Czech Republic, Germany and the Netherlands. Eija’s solo debut Griffyr - contemporary kantele music was released in October 2007.
In addition to commissioning several chamber works from Finnish composers, Eija has performed contemporary music with Ensemble Ars Nova from Sweden, Nederlands Blazers Ensemble and, in Finland with Avanti!, the Tapiola Sinfonietta and Uusinta. She works also with Finnish dancer Jaana Klevering and plays the electric kantele in the Beyond Improvisation Collective . In her own pieces and arrangements Eija likes to combine jazz and world music (Finnish folk, Latin American) influences.
Eija graduated from the Sibelius Academy in 2000 and was engaged as regional artist in North Karelia from 2000 to 2003. At the moment she is working on a performer’s doctorate at the Sibelius Academy.****************************************************

Eija Kankaanranta on aktiivinen kantelemusiikin uudistaja, joka toimii sekä solistina että kamarimuusikkona. Nykymusiikki, improvisointi ja yhteistyö tanssijoitten kanssa ovat hänelle läheisiä taiteellisen työn muotoja. Kankaanranta on kantaesittänyt mm. PerMagnus Lindborgin, Jyrki Linjaman, Kirmo Lintisen ja Olli Virtaperkon musiikkia.
Kankaanranta on esiintynyt Joensuun kaupunginorkesterin ja Pori Sinfoniettan solistina, ja soittanut uutta musiikkia myös Avantin, Uusinnan, Tapiola Sinfoniettan, Zagrosin sekä ruotsalaisen Ensemble Ars Novan ja Nederlands Blazers Ensemblen kanssa. Kankaanrannan Griffyr-cd julkaistiin lokakuussa 2007.
