Derek Roberts is simply a kid from a small town in Kentucky. Grew up with his brother and his mom, but his father was nowhere to be found. He didn't grow up with much money, but one could say that Derek had a pretty normal childhood.
His interests in different genres of music has flip-flopped over the years as he has grown up. His first love was good ol' pop music (the only kind anyone listened to when they were little). Then his interests gradually faded into rock in general. Then his interest became specific when he got into metal and actually tried to start a little band in the 6th grade with his buddy Michael Goyacochea. It didn't work out, as you could predict, but it sparked his interests in actually making music himself.
As the sounds of pop culture turned to hip hop so did Derek's interests in music. The hip hop culture had consumed him by 7th grade and he started to write raps and poems and such. By 8th grade he had teamed up with fellow classmate Deshon Floyd to form a dynamic duo of hip hop known as DJ D Kid & Pretty Boi Floyd. Derek(DJ D Kid) was intrigued by the beats that seemed to pump the life into almost every party he went to. There fore he decided to make these beats himself. Derek didn't have a "studio" so the recording style was very primitive and ghetto, but they seemed to make it work. On the other hand of the duo was one of the greatest freestyle rappers he had ever heard live. There weren't to many Derek had heard live, but Deshon Floyd was talented and Derek knew it. Deshon is still free styling and making a name for himself in Frankfort, Kentucky as one of the best freestyle rappers in the town. You can check this duo out at www.myspace.com/djdkidandprettyboifloyd
The duo then had a summer full of music and they made a CD's worth of music. However, their freshman year was to be served in two different schools. As the school year started they lost contact with each other and stopped making music. However now Derek and Deshon still contact each other and talk about getting together again.
Freshman year was an eye opener as Derek's interests switched from the beat blasting ghetto hip hop he loved so dearly to classic rock. It sparked Derek's interest in the piano and so he started taking piano lessons. His freshman year was not all that bad, he made new friends and was introduced to techno.
A summer night towards the beginning of sophomore year Derek's friend's older brother gave him a ride home from a party an introduced him to one of the most incredible, iconic electronica groups that exist today, Daft Punk. Daft Punk inspired Derek to listen to all the techno he could get his hands on. Benny Benassi, Chemical Brothers, Kraftwerk, Figurine, Electro Funk Lovers, etc.
It was only recent that Derek has become interested in making techno and house music himself. Equipped with new computer software and 3 keyboards, Derek's musical ideas are constantly flowing through his head every second. At age 16 his passion for techno and electronica is limitless and he is still in his sophomore year.{} ..
