The Corpus Christi Sharks are part of the AF2 Football Family. The CC Sharks home turf is on Radiology Associates Field in the American Bank Center Arena that seats on the Bay of Corpus Christi Texas. The Sharks 2008 AF2 season started on March 29th against the Austin Wrangler with a 61-49 victory for the Sharks 2008 season. Here are some Fact of the Arena Football and the Corpus Christi Sharks.
Arena Football is the only professional sport to hold a patent US Patent #4,911,443 making it a rival free game. The Arena Football League is also the only professional sports league that's mission statement includes a fans Bill of Rights.
On January 14th, 2000, the af2 was created to serve mid-size cities and develop talent for the AFL. The very first af2 game was played on March 31, 2000 between the Tennessee Valley Vipers and the Birmingham Steeldogs in front of nearly 15,000 fans.
The City of Corpus Christi was granted an expansion team on October 18, 2006 which later that year would become the Corpus Christi Sharks. The Sharks ownership includes former Dallas Cowboys Special Teams Coach JOE AVEZZANO. During his time in Dallas, Joe was part of three Super Bowl Championships. Joe also has been part of other Arena League ownership groups and even coached in the Arena League bringing the Sharks a tremendous amount of football knowledge and experience.
On the field, the Sharks added a wealth of experience at the Head Coaching position in Mike Trigg. Coach Trigg has won an Arena Bowl Championship as both a player and a Head Coach, plus, he has had a hand in getting other expansion teams in the Arena League started including the Philadelphia Soul.
The Sharks played their first game at the American Bank Center on April 7th, 2006. While the final score didn’t end up in the Sharks favor, the Arena Game was a big hit with the fans. In their inaugural season the Sharks suffered some growing pains but rallied to win 5 of their final 6 games and just miss the playoffs by one game.
Two Sharks players from the inaugural team earned “All af2†honors, DB/KR Ivory McCann, and, DE Estus Hood.
