Hello everyone! My name is Piper Lyn Harris and I have a story to tell you that didn't have to happen. I have herpes. Yes, I'm a baby, but I got it from a cold sore my Mommy had when she was pregnant with me. What we didn't know was that while she was pregnant, she couldn't fight off viruses the way most people can, and it went into her blood and then to me.
I was born February 27, 2008 at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, FL and I felt so great until I developed a fever on Tuesday March 4th and was re-admitted to Morton Plant with pneumonia.
By Sunday the 9th I ended up in All Children’s Hospital in South St. Petersburg, FL with a diagnosis of liver failure and an unspecified viral infection that was made me lose precious clotting factors in my blood. They said that one little poke and I could bleed to death! It was the doctors there who diagnosed me with Herpes Simplex Virus I, the simple cold sore variety.
But Thursday the 13th I got to fly in a helicopter to Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where they didn't think I was going to even make it through the night. It was a fun ride, but I had to wait for my Mommy and Grandma Beki to drive all the way up there to be with me.
I got a new liver on April 21, 2008 after all this time of getting a WHOLE liter of blood along with platelets and plasma every single day just to survive! So many people donated blood and plasma in my honor so not only me, but other people just like me who need blood products, can have the chance to live!
My Mommy Jesi and Daddy Ronnie stayed with me every step of the way except when my mom got too sick and they wouldn't let her in to see me. They stayed in the hospital until I got out.
We have received an overwhelming amount of love, prayers, good thoughts, positive energy, and moral support from literally THOUSANDS of people who have anxiously awaited Piper's arrival and have stayed with us throughout her journey. We could never express how much this means to our family and if I've left anyone out, please, PLEASE know that it was not intentional.
We are asking people to please donate blood products such as whole blood and plasma. Piper received continuous transfusions of plasma and intermittent transfusions of platelets and we believe the supply needs to be replenished so that others can receive the same life saving blood that she was fortunate enough to receive. Please contact your local Red Cross or Blood Donation Center to see how you can help and donate in Piper's honor.
Please stay tuned to our blog for updates on Piper's condition and please... please continue sending your prayers, good thoughts, and positive energy.
