Ruth Slattery is the woman behind Native State. Starting out with the band Djinn then moving to a shared house with other artists & musicians, including Damon Gough who was the first to find success as Badly Drawn Boy, Ruth set up her own recording studio to focus on her songwriting. Native State is the result. We have a unique sound with strong melodic songwriting.
Line-up : Ruth Slattery (songwriter/vocals/acoustic guitar/keyboards/), Tom Owen (bass), Christie Spurling (drums), and Vikki Brunning (vocals/viola/keys).
'Something for your ears...' debut CD was released October 2007 through DreamTree records and also available on itunes/napster/rhapsody/amazonmp3
A new EP, ‘Chameleon’ is due for release in 2008 – available on itunes and all other download platforms from July with a physical release street date of 17 September.

Sounds Like: Native State....like nothing you've heard before.

Other people have said....

Opening track 'Dead Again' is a delightful example of the range of Ruth's voice and her talents on guitar, with much more to come. Some tracks are folky, others more jazzy and even a bit rocky but throughout we are kept company by Ruth's wonderful voice. 'Spiritualised' is more electro sounding with piano and synth vying for the lead and the vocals are even more stretched to Annie Lennox proportions... with her own eclectic sound indicating a bright future in store for Ms Slattery and Native State. They are currently working on a new EP, if it's more of the same I'm looking forward to hearing it.
Sean Bruce. Sandman Magazine. Review of 'Something for your ears...' album

'NATIVE STATE now has a chance to display her deep, dynamic range- it’s genuinely emotive and quite captivating.'
Jon manchestermusic.co.uk Review of Open Mic spot hosted by John Robb at BreakInTheCity, Bridgewater Hall, Manchester 20 October 2007

'NATIVE STATE I’ve heard before and this CD has the vocals of a very talented woman indeed. Musically it suffers in that the tunes aren’t pushing the singer’s abilities to quite the extent they could. But it’s more than compensated for by a very entertaining singing range. MMM ½ (max MMMM) Jon manchestermusic.co.uk Demo Review at BreakInTheCity, Bridgewater Hall, Manchester 20 October 2007

' ....sparklingly soulful acoustic pop with a hint of jazz... from the rich and melodic vocal cords and deftly played guitar of singer Ruth Slattery, here in solo mode. "Monkey See, Monkey Do", a world-weary look at politics and the media set to an intricate but compelling tune, is the highlight of a set that's a real breath of fresh air. ' manchestermusic.co.uk review of CASTLE ROCKS CANCER charity gig 30 June/1 July 2007

" Very interesting...great vocals.....commercial yet with a touch of the avant garde" Ron Atkinson (ex 808 state manager)

" Glorious....lovely sound....jazz....great vocals...commercial...and it breaks the rules" Pete Bear (Producer, Vertical Rooms)
